With recent news that fares for Liverpool’s hackney cabs are set to rise - some may be considering exploring the city’s huge range of private hire firms when they are out and about this weekend.

Liverpool City Council is set to raise fares for black cabs , following a request from Unite the Union.

The rise could impact on weekend clubbers the most - with close to an extra pound placed on fares starting after 2am on Sunday mornings.

But for those customers who will choose the private hire option - who is the cheapest?

Liverpool has a huge range of minicab firms and we undoubtedly won’t have been able to contact them all - but we attempted to reach a mix of popular and well-known companies to ask them for several different quotes on some typical journeys this weekend.

Our hypothetical day on Saturday would see a journey from Lime Street Station to a friend’s house in Lark Lane at about 1pm.

The next perspective journey would see us travel from Anfield to Lime Street Station at around 5pm - as a marker of how much Liverpool fans may have had to pay after Saturday’s 3pm kick-off against Southampton.

Finally, we asked firms how much they would charge for an early-hours trip from popular clubbing sport Seel Street back to the friend’s house in Lark Lane - with this journey timed at around 3am.

We made contact with six different firms - although the grouping of companies means this actually covers 10 firms in total.

Here are the different prices that we were offered for each journey from the different cab companies.

Delta

Delta is one of the biggest and best-known private hire firms operating in Liverpool.

With its head office actually in Bootle, the firm's cars can be spotted everywhere over the city centre and elsewhere.

We called Delta and asked for quotes for the three journeys specified above.

For journey one - a Saturday afternoon trip from Lime Street to Lark Lane - we were quoted at between £6.50 and £7.

The second journey from Anfield to Lime Street at about 5pm was quoted at £5.50.

Finally, our early-hours trip home from Seel Street to Lark Lane was quoted at costing around £7.

Alpha

Alpha is another of the most widely-known firms in the city, with its central hub based in Duke Street.

We contacted the company and were quoted the exact same price for the Saturday afternoon journey as Delta - at £6.50 to £7.

The post-match journey from Anfield to Lime Street came in marginally more expensive with Alpha - with a quoted £6.50 compared to Delta's £5.50.

Finally, the 3am trip from the nightlife hotspot of Seel Street to the Lark Lane area of Aigburth was priced up at between £7 and £8.

One Call - (Excel, A1 and Seaforth)

One Call is a relatively new firm, which is the result of a joint enterprise between established companies Excel Cars in Dingle, A1 cars in Huyton and Seaforth Radio Cars.

Describing themselves as a "private hire powerhouse", the group has been set up to make it easier for people to access cabs all over the city, with a single number and app connecting customers with cars from all three companies.

When we contacted One Call, we were quoted a price of £7 from Lime Street to Lark Lane at 1pm on Saturday afternoon.

The second journey from Anfield to Lime Street again was given as £6 or £7 and the early-hours trip from Seel Street to Lark Lane was the same as Alpha at £7-£8.

Brittania and Davy Liver

Major firm Brittania, which has bases in Knowsley and St Helens, took over major Liverpool firm Davy Liver last year.

Davy Liver was one of the city’s biggest firms.

We contacted Brittania and were quoted some of the cheapest prices for the three perspective journeys.

The initial afternoon trip from Lime Street to Lark Lane was priced at just £6.

The after-football journey quote was also low - with a quote of £5.50 offered to take fans back from Anfield to Lime Street.

Finally, the low price of £6 was offered to us for the 3am trip from Seel Street to the Aigburth area.

Radio Cars

Radio Cars is another Liverpool firm, based in the city centre, which provides cars for journeys all across Merseyside.

The prices offered to us when we called Radio Cars were very similar to others for the first two journeys - with a £6.50 quote for the lunchtime Lime Street to Lark Lane journey and a £6-£7 quote for the post-match journey from Anfield to Lime Street station.

But Radio Cars offered one of the more expensive quotes for the late-night journey - with a price of £8-9 proffered for the 3am trip between Seel Street and Lark Lane.

Village Taxis

Village Taxis - which operates out of a base in Garston - has been serving Liverpool with cabs for 47 years.

And it is another firm to offer some pretty cheap rates.

When we called Village, we were first offered a quote for £5-£6 to get from Lime Street to Lark Lane.

After our visit to watch Liverpool take on Southampton, we were told a journey back to the station would cost us between £5 and £7.

Finally, our night on the town would be completed with a reasonably-priced trip from Seel Street to Lark Lane for between £5 and £7.

We understand this is not an exhaustive list of all private hire firms in the city and there were a number that did not pick up the phone to us while we were putting the story together.

The idea is to give a cross-section of fares at some of the more prominent companies in Liverpool.

My thoughts too, if they're that bothered about an extra £1 after pissing over £100 down the toilet they need to stop drinking.

The fare increase was put in by Unite, all 30 members of them, and was passed by a Labour committee, so it's not surprising that some of the other 2000 Liverpool drivers who knew nothing of the increase being submitted might have different views.

Didn't it go out to consultation?

Liverpool City Council is set to raise fares for black cabs , following a request from Unite the Union.

Sorry, but around here if a REQUST is submitted for an increase then it goes out to consultation BEFORE being passed by any committee. If it is then passed by the committee it goes out for public consultation BEFORE it is implemented.
Has any of this taken place?

That's sort of what the law says should happen.
