Uber concealed a hack that affected 57 million customers and drivers, the company has confirmed.

The 2016 breach was hidden by the ride-sharing firm which paid hackers $100,000 (£75,000) to delete the data.

The company's former chief executive Travis Kalanick knew about the breach over a year ago, according to Bloomberg, which first broke the news.

The hackers found 57 million names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers, Uber said.

Within that number, 600,000 drivers had their names and license details exposed. A resource page for those affected has been set up.

Drivers have been offered free credit monitoring protection, but per Uber's statement, affected customers will not be given the same.

"While we have not seen evidence of fraud or misuse tied to the incident, we are monitoring the affected accounts and have flagged them for additional fraud protection," Uber's chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said.

"None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it," he added.

"While I can't erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every Uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes."

Two things.

1. Uber hid this massive data breach from the multiple data protection authorities throughout the world.

2. It appears Uber paid some hackers to find the stolen data and delete it. So this so called ‘fit and proper’ company clearly got out the Yellow Pages and found the right people under ‘Hackers for rent’, and those honest hackers employed by the so called ‘fit and proper’ Uber looked up in the Hackers A to Z to find out where the stolen data was.

Big mistake Uber, very big mistake.

I was listening carefully to this on the radio earlier and it is believed that this hack was some disgruntled ex employees not a criminal gang and uber paid them off

secondly this is the fault of the OLD management i.e. kalinick I think that Uber will be able to pin it on him and use it to sever all ties between him and Uber with ufail themselves getting a token fine

Be in no doubt it will not be a token fine.

Be that fine from the US, the UK, or both.

But they have also admitted complicity in a crime. That would be my main concern.

Two hackers plead guilty to extorting Uber, LinkedIn and Lynda in massive cyber-ransom plot that saw the details of 57 million users exposed

Two hackers pleaded guilty in federal court on Wednesday for a conspiracy to extract bounties from Uber Technologies Inc, LinkedIn and other corporations in exchange for promises to delete information stolen from Amazon Web Services, according to the Justice Department.

The two, Brandon Glover, of Florida, and Vasile Mereacre, of Toronto, Canada, have been released on bond, with a sentencing hearing set for March.

The men downloaded 57 million Uber user records, including customer and driver data, from Amazon.com Inc's cloud platform, in November 2016, the Justice Department said. Uber soon agreed to pay $100,000 in bitcoin through a third party and demanded they sign confidentiality agreements.

In December 2016 they demanded money from LinkedIn's Lynda.com for a promise to delete more than 90,000 records, but stopped communicating in January as the company sought to identify them.

'We're dealing with the most sophisticated cyber actors in the world,' said FBI Special Agent in Charge John F. Bennett. 'In order to take on those people on the front lines of the cyber security battle, we rely heavily on our valued relationships and open dialogue with private sector companies in cyber industries. Their willingness to speedily report intrusions to our investigators allows us to find and arrest those who commit data breaches.'

The pair went on to demand money from LinkedIn's and Lynda.com for a promise to delete more than 90,000 records, but the company managed to identify them instead

The Uber breach saw a $148 million settlement over allegations the company violated state data breach reporting and data security laws.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra was highly critical of Uber at the time. 'Uber's decision to cover up this breach was a blatant violation of the public's trust,' Becerra said in a statement. 'The company failed to safeguard user data and notify authorities when it was exposed. Consistent with its corporate culture at the time, Uber swept the breach under the rug in deliberate disregard of the law.'

The breach saw the ousting of Joe Sullivan, Uber's chief security officer and Travis Kalanick, Uber’s former chief executive who oversaw the payments.
