The attack happened in the early hours of Saturday, at a taxi rank on Baldwin Street.
A 56-year-old man from St Helens has been arrested and remains in custody this morning.
Merseyside Police said: “It is believed the victim and offender know each other and were part of the same group who were on a night out together.”
Police and forensic officers are still at the scene in St Helens town centre, with part of Baldwin Street remaining cordoned off.
