Twelve taxi and private hire drivers have been SUSPENDED from work after a major police operation in Liverpool’s Red Light District.

Merseyside Police and Liverpool Council carried out a crackdown this weekend in Sheil Road in Kensington - the epicentre of the city’s sex worker crisis.

It follows an ECHO investigation which highlighted how cab drivers are working with brothels to encourage groups of men to be taken to the area in order to pay for sex.

Our investigation involved reporters specifically being urged to travel by taxi to Kensington and pay large sums to cabbies up front as part of a “package deal.”

These reports - as well as those from people living in the area - led police to specifically target taxis and private hire cars bringing people to see sex workers in Kensington.

Community Inspector for Kensington and Tuebrook , Bobby Woodhall said: “Working with our partners at Liverpool City Council licensing and the force’s Roads Policing unit, an operation was conducted on Sheil Road in Kensington over the weekend.

“We are responding to issues relating to sex work in the Sheil Road and surrounding area, and the impact this has on all communities. This includes reports of people using black cabs and private hire vehicles to be taken to the area to visit sex workers.”

merseyside police said that the operation saw “numerous private and commercial vehicles, and taxis and cabs stopped.”

Inspector Woodhall said: “Enforcement action was taken and crime prevention advice was offered to the drivers to make them aware of the issues the area has faced and the policing response. The operation was successful and will be run again in the near future.”

Orange Light District operation - the results

The police and council operation has been regarded as a success and WILL be held in Sheil Road again in the future.

A total of 15 drivers were given defect notices for minor issues with their cabs by the council’s licensing team.

Reading between the lines of this and another couple of follow up pieces, looks like the kind of thing that they normally turn a blind eye to, but when the press upset the applecart then the powers that be have to look as if they're doing something.

So it's probably the cab drivers who are the whipping boys, while the sex trade itself will just carry on as normal.

But job done as far as PR department is concerned.
