‘Dangerous predator’ posed as taxi driver to rape woman on her way home from night out

A ‘dangerous predator’ who posed as a taxi driver to rape a woman on her way home from a night out has been jailed. Marius Dolhascanu targeted his 30-year-old victim in Wigan in 2016. She had been out with a friend on Sunday, May 1, when she left a nightspot on Market Street, Hindley, and looked for a taxi to take her home.

Pretending to be a cabbie, Dolhascanu, 42, offered her a lift in his BMW. But instead of taking her home, he took her to another address before raping her. After the terrifying ordeal Dolhascanu, of Hey Street, Wigan, dumped his victim on Broadway, in Hindley. She made her way home where she told her partner what had happened and called the police.

Detectives studied CCTV footage from the area and discovered it wasn’t the first time Dolhascanu had posed as a taxi driver and found he had even given one man a lift home in exchange for £10. Today Dolhascanu was sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison after being found guilty of rape following a trial at Bolton Crown Court.

Speaking after the sentencing investigating officer, Det Sgt Stuart Woodhead, praised the victim’s ‘outstanding bravery’. He said: “Marius Dolhascanu is a predator who prowled Market Street in Hindley posing as a taxi driver before seizing his opportunity and subjecting an unsuspecting woman to a horrible ordeal.

“Even after his arrest he still continued to plead innocent and refused to admit what he did, which meant that his victim had to relive what had happened by giving evidence during his trial. “The bravery she showed in supporting the investigation and giving evidence is nothing short of outstanding and ultimately it has meant that a dangerous man is now off the streets. “I hope this result will bring her some comfort.”

It’s three and half years longer than Warboys sentence.

I think we should be looking to America over sentencing.

Fifty years for rape, life without parole for multiple offences.

Maybe sentencing, but never ever the judicial system. [-X
