Controversial minicab firm Uber has been given an operators licence in Aberdeen.

The American ride-hailing app who have recently been banned from London and York confirmed it was given the go ahead to operate by Aberdeen City Council but have yet to set a date for its release in the Scottish city.

The minicab app currently operates in both Glasgow and Edinburgh where it has come under much scrutiny from existing private hire and taxi firms.

According to STV a spokesperson from Uber said: "We're really pleased about being granted a licence in Aberdeen. Uber has brought more choice and competition to cities across the UK, helping to raise service levels across the board.

"Passengers tell us they love being able to book a reliable ride at the touch of a button, pay without cash and track their car on their phone.

"Furthermore, tens of thousands of licensed private hire drivers across the country have partnered with us because with Uber they can choose if, when and where they drive."

Brown envolopes springs to mind on this.
All drivers taxi and PH must pass knowledge test and also all new drivers should have wav's

Just have to wait and see if drivers switches over to them. I for one will not be

Does one not have to obtain planning permission for a private hire office before being granted a operator license,cannot find on Council planning website that U*** have applied for or been granted planning permission for office in Berry Street.
Think Overview and Scrutiny Committee should investigate this decision as it does smack that brown envelopes probably did change hands.

Is that automatic?

Suspect it depends on the precise circumstances. For a start, Uber won't be allowing customers who just walk into the office off the street looking for a car, and to that degree won't have cars outside waiting for work and/or possible disturbance late at night.

Of course, they still might have cars coming and going, but then again they might just be using the Berry Street office as a booking facility, and might have premises elsewhere for other purposes.

It looks like there are purpose built offices in Berry Street, which would certainly point towards planning permission *not* being needed, but it would all depend on the individual circumstances and precisely the intended use of the premises.

But I doubt if there's an automatic need for planning permission.
