Council prosecutes 53 taxi and private hire drivers - these were their offences

Liverpool City Council has prosecuted more than 50 taxi and private hire drivers. The council is behind a major move to drive-up the standards of the trade in the city and has stepped up its enforcement operation against drivers who don't comply with the law.

Those targeted had committed a wide range of offences, ranging from illegally plying for hire to driving without insurance. The majority of drivers prosecuted hailed from Liverpool - but there was also one punishment handed out to someone in the city from as far away as Blackburn.

Here is a full breakdown of the drivers who were prosecuted, where they came from and what their offence was.

Knowsley
Plying for hire - 4
Cords and exposed tyres - 1

Liverpool
Fail to engage meter - 1
Fail to wear badge - 1
No consent - 2
No licence - 2
Plying for hire and insurance - 6
Section 73 offence - 1
Tyres - 5
Cords and exposed tyres - 1
Failure to return badges after revocation - 17

Sefton

St Helens

Blackburn

Over the last year, the council has vowed to step up its enforcement action - with nine staff working in conjunction with a number of police officers to spot vehicles which aren't complying with the law. In December alone, 241 defect notices or suspension orders were issued on taxis, 44 drivers were issued with written cautions, 118 fixed penalty notices were issued to private vehicles parked on taxi stands and four drivers were warned for cherry picking.

Councillor Christine Banks, chair of the licensing committee, said: "I don't believe that any other city outside of London is doing as we much as we are to crack down on drivers who flout the law. The statistics speak for themselves and our message is that we are on the side of those drivers who play by the rules. We are determined to make the playing field as level as it can be and support the taxi trade as much as we can.

"It should be remembered that most drivers follow the rules and law abiding private hire and hackney owners have nothing to worry about. "There are a very small minority who breach regulations. We are committed to taking action, and in doing so, send a clear message out that it is not acceptable. "Passengers should always ensure they only use properly-licensed taxis or pre-book private hire vehicles, otherwise they are placing themselves in danger."

Does Councillor Banks really mean London is doing more than Liverpool regarding enforcement,is she not aware that there is no enforcement in London ie. Uber, false medical certificates, false DBS certificates, plying for hire by private hire going unchecked.
