Taxi driver found with drugs in system while driving

A TAXI driver has been banned from driving after he was found with cocaine in his system on one of the Llyn Peninsula’s most popular roads. Adrian Jones Williams, 52, of 12 Ger y Bont, Abererch was stopped on the A499 on 20 September and failed a roadside drugs test.

Caernarfon Magistrates’ Court heard that Williams was driving a Vauxhall Zafira licensed as a taxi when he was pulled over by the police.

A drugs test showed he had 61 micrograms of cocaine in his system per litre of blood. He pleaded not guilty to two charges of driving over the drugs limit. But he was found guilty and received a 20-month driving ban, 150 hours community service and was ordered to pay costs of £685.

Gwynedd Council, as the taxi licensing authority, revoked Williams’ taxi licence, before the court’s decision to impose a 20-month driving ban, after information was received regarding the charges against him.

Gareth Jones, the senior manager for planning and environmental services for Gwynedd Council, said: “We have a responsibility to protect the safety of the public and we therefore take any allegations seriously regarding the conduct of licensed taxi drivers. Licensed drivers convicted of driving any vehicle whilst under the influence of drink or drugs is a very serious matter.”
