Trio attack taxi driver in Hull after arguing over fare

A taxi driver was attacked by three men he had picked up after a "fare disagreement". The driver says he had picked the men and a woman up at Paragon Interchange at around 4.40am on Saturday, February 3. He dropped the woman off in Beverley Road before continuing to Cranbrook Avenue, in north Hull. The driver says the men then attacked him before they left the scene in the direction of 38th Avenue.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police, said: "The driver had collected a fare of three men and a woman at Paragon Interchange in Hull at 4.40am. The woman was dropped off on Beverley Road near Asda and the driver took the three men onto Cranbrook Avenue. "The driver has stated that there was a dispute about the fare and the three passengers got out and assaulted him.

"They then left the scene and headed in the direction of 38th Avenue."

The police are asking that anyone with any information to call 101 quoting the log number 101 of 03/02/18.

Always been the case that you cannot demand money before completing the journey, can ask if they have the money to pay the fare in full,if not you have the legitimate right to refuse, presuming we are discussing a TAXI service here, not private hire.

I take the view that drivers can ask for a deposit.

Our byelaws state that the fare may be asked for prior to the journey and a refusal may result in the journey being declined.

Applies to both PH and HC, was added due to a big increase in non-payers/runners/not enough money.

Bus fares, train fares, plane fares etc are all paid in advance, so it's not unreasonable to request it for ph or Hackney. In fact Hackney carriages are more vulnerable due to not being able to collect customers data.

One of advantages of Uber - less danger of not getting paid

Of course, difference with HCs/PHs and buses, trains and planes is that for the latter the fare is generally known in advance, so makes a bit more easier to justify advance payment.

But did I read that Uber was introducing (or at least considering) offering a cash option, or was I just imagining it? #-o

Yeah, I heard that too but middle of last year sometime. Shoes that a lot of customers must still prefer cash payments.

Please can you post the bylaw or let me know where to find it so that I can let our council know. it is becoming a problem here.

If in doubt, MUF, we do this on all runs out of area, and some within, you don't need a by law just do it, and give them any change at the end of a run
