Post subject:  New Driver.
Like Karren, i have decided to become a taxi driver. I am currently in the process of applying for my Hackney licence and am just waiting on the CRB check. (It came back quickly at first but i had to send it back as they spelt my name wrong!) :?
I am very much looking foward to starting and have read some of the messages on here with interest. My background is in care work and i have most recently worked with social services which did my nut in. Hopefully Taxi driving will be more successful.
I am hoping to start by the beginning of March. With this in mind, what would people suggest that i have ready when i start? (both practicle stuff and things to do with accounts etc). I find myself worrying about the small things like not having enough change etc. Should i be worrying about bigger issues, or not worrying at all?

A Taxi. (with fuel)

Receipts.

Change.

Some clue as to where your going.

Well I'm off out now for a few hours, I got one fiver, 6 pound coins, couple of 50p and a quid of 20p's, and five 10p's, and I ain't worried

I am not one of the "must carry 50 quids worth" type of driver

I got my car the other day. Ive bought a 406 est. Ive also got some work booked up (Including some regular contracts).
Got reciept book etc. Sounds like i am covered. Lets hope that ive got some kind of idea of what i am doing, or i might be buggered! :wink:

Don't worry about anything, it wont effect the outcome one little bit. :shock:

As for change I always go out with at least a score in change, and a couple of fivers. But then I am loaded. :wink:

Thanks for the advice y'all. I'm not really worried or anything, i cant wait to start. Plus ive got a bit of an advantage as i will be working in conjunction with my dad. He's independantly built up custom over the last couple of years. He never entertained us working together before as sometimes family working together does not work. Lately i think hes seen how keen i am.
I guess that it must be tough starting out alone these days. (based on recent experience).
How much should drivers be in competition with each other vs in co-operation with each other?

I think it's best to compete on service rather than price. :wink:

I used to religously have £50 quid in the bag, and if possible it was always the same coins and notes :oops:

Now I just take out about £20 in notes and whatever's in the bag. I just make sure the bag never has too much in it - eg if it's getting too full I use the coins for fuel, but if it's light then I use notes :wink:

Ive had in mind from the start that service is more important. We will always wear shirt and tie and hold doors open for people etc. I imagine thats what people come back to you for.

The scrotes on a saturday night wont care if youve got the wifes thong on as long as you get em home! :shock:

If a thong will help, i'm well up for that! Wont use the wifes tho, she's lent hers to the circus to use as a tightrope! :wink:
