Motorist grabbed taxi driver by the neck in road rage attack at roundabout

A motorist grabbed a taxi driver around the neck in a road rage incident at a major city roundabout. Mohamed Metwaly, aged 46, confronted the man in front of his frightened passenger at Charles Cross roundabout, Plymouth magistrates heard.

Electrician Metwaly claimed the taxi driver sounded his horn and then made a rude gesture with his hand. The father-of-one, from Palmerston Street, Stoke, denied assaulting the man by beating but was found guilty after a trial this week. Metwaly was handed a community order with unpaid work and a court bill of nearly £900.

Gareth Warden, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said the incident happened on July 16 last year. He added that the victim was grabbed by the neck for a matter of seconds and was left with a red mark. The court heard that his passenger gave evidence for the prosecution during the trial.

Mr Warden said the taxi driver was left with a red mark to his neck. He added the victim had told the police: “I was assaulted on a quiet Sunday morning. There was no excuse for him to grab my throat. Not only did it scare me but it also scared my passenger.” The taxi driver said he was left worried that he would encounter Metwaly again on the roads as he worked.

Bill LaHive, for Metwaly, said his client had indicated and turned left at the police station. He added that he noticed the taxi had sounded its horn so much that he thought there must have been something wrong with his car. Mr Lahive said the taxi driver was able to continue working on the day of the incident and the following day.

Handing in references, the solicitor said he had a “spotless character”. Mr LaHive said he only stopped to inspect his vehicle but he then saw the taxi driver “give him the finger”. He added the taxi driver was able to continue working on the day of the incident and the following day.

Magistrates handed Metwaly a 12-month community order with 60 hours unpaid work. They ordered that he pay the victim £500 compensation, £300 costs and £85 victim surcharge.
