Quote from readers letter in tonights local rag
York taxi drivers are in the firing line
by Reader's letter
AS fox hunting has been abolished it seems that taxi drivers are the next in line for the powers-that-be to have a pop at.
First of all we have our rank taken away from us with a promise of a new gateway to York through the railway station.
What have we got? Absolute chaos in Tea Room Square.
There is more traffic trying to go round it than the A19 roundabout.
I would like to know whose idea it was and to invite them down to see that it's an accident waiting to happen.
Secondly another bright spark wants to run trains to London and bypass the station taxi drivers who pay more than £400 a year for the privilege of taking GNER customers to and from home.
A third bright spark wants to open the old Presto store into a nightclub. That is fair enough, but to have a holding room for 200 who have been drinking all night is a recipe for disaster.
With the new licensing laws there are not any big crowds leaving at the same time so you don't get as many confrontations. But the holding room idea is taking a step backwards.
And then to put buses on to take them home - well we all remember what went on with the buses from Ikon & Diva. You would need police to ride shotgun on these buses. Who would pay for that?
At the end of the day don't try and mend something that isn't broken.
