Terrifying moment young woman is dragged along road as taxi drives away with door open

Article with video footage

This is the shocking moment a young woman was dragged along a road as she tried to get out of a taxi in Liverpool. Hairdresser Kayleigh Dixon was left unconscious and lying in the middle of the road after a Hackney driver sped off with its door open. Her boyfriend has described the horrifying moment he saw the incident unfold, stating that at first he thought Kayleigh may have been killed.

The terrifying incident was caught on camera by Chris’s sister, who was filming after the group said they were being ripped off by the driver. Kayleigh, 29 and her boyfriend Chris Mahaffy, 30, had been enjoying a night out with family and friends and had got into the cab in Dale Street at around 6am. They were attempting to head home to Speke and said the driver refused to engage his meter and instead demanded a fare of £30 up front.

After accepting the fare due to the late hour and cold weather, Chris said the driver then demanded more money. He explained: “He turned around and said that because there were five of us he actually wanted £40 - he was very angry and aggressive. “We decided to get out and Kayleigh was the last to leave - the driver didn’t know that my sister was filming the incident.”

As the clip shows, when Kayleigh directed Chris’s sister to film the driver’s badge number on the inside of the door, he suddenly drove off - dragging the young woman several metres along Dale Street and leaving her lying injured on the floor.

A furious Chris said that he chased after the driver, who still had his doors open, but claimed he raced through a red light as he drove away. He said: “Kayleigh had fallen forward and banged her head - she was basically out cold in the street - I thought ‘oh my god he’s killed her.’” He added: “I was shaking with anger - I hope we find him and he gets dealt with properly.”

Chris took Kayleigh to hospital yesterday and said that while she has been cleared of any major injuries - such as a bleeding on the brain - she has been left badly bruised and suffering dizzy spells. The couple said they will meet with police today to report the incident.

Kayleigh posted the video on social media, where hundreds of people have commented to wish her well and condemn the actions of the cab driver. Friend Demi Rochel said: “Please make sure you report him this can’t be left here! I really hope your ok Kay.” Sarah Graham added: “Oh my god Kayleigh, can’t believe he did that I hope your ok.”

After posting the video, Kayleigh later updated her friends to let them know that she was ok, but vowed to make sure the issue was taken further. She said: “Would like to thank everyone for all your kind comments and messages regarding my video of what happened last night I am ok fortunately could of been a lot worse but it’s not the end thanks everyone.”

Would also be interesting to know the full context of what happened rather than just a couple of seconds of something that clearly went on for several minutes.

as we all know journalists always edit soundbites and video to distort the truth but would you drive off with someone hanging on or would you call for assistance ?

Not normally, but too many variables to say.

Well that's the thing - it's not clear precisely what was going on. Driver could have been threatened, and/or something happening outside the vehicle which isn't apparent from the very short clip.

Would have another look at the clip, but can't spare the half hour to load the webpage and wait an eternity for the video, which might not even load
