Thugs call taxi to New Parks then threaten driver with knives and steal his car

Police are hunting two thugs who robbed a taxi driver and drove away in his car early this morning. The driver was targeted by two men he collected at an address in Elgin Avenue, New Parks, Leicester, shortly before 3am, Leicestershire Police said.

The men threatened the 50-year-old driver with what are believed to be knives and told him to hand over his mobile phone. The driver was then told to get out of the taxi, a Toyota Prius, and the men drove off in it. Police said the driver was not injured.

The car was later recovered in Gooding Avenue, at the junction with Redmarle Road, Braunstone a short while later.

Detective Constable Krupa Parmar, the investigating officer, said: “The car can be driven without keys, which the driver didn’t hand over. “It can only be driven for a short time without the keys, which is when the suspects abandoned it in Gooding Avenue.

“I would like to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in Elgin Avenue, Gooding Avenue, Redmarle Road or the surrounding areas in the early hours of this morning.”

One of the men, who was believed to be the front seat passenger and drove the taxi, is white, between 5ft 8ins and 5ft 9ins, in his early 20s and of slim build. He was wearing a red top and black trousers.

Contact Det Con Parmar on 101.
