Carshalton woman found guilty of attacking Uber driver she wrongly accused of stealing her bag

A man and woman, from Mitcham and Carshalton, launched their attack in Streatham

A woman and man from south London have been found guilty of attacking an Uber driver after falsely accusing him of purposely driving off with a bag in the back of his cab.

They were part of a group which tracked down the taxi driver and beat him up to the extent he had to undergo surgery for serious injuries in hospital.

Charlotte Johnson, 20, of Green Close in Carshalton, and Ioan Pal, 23, a Romanian national of Aspen Gardens in Mitcham, were both found guilty of causing Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) on Tuesday (May 8th) following a trial at Inner London Crown Court.

Johnson and Pal had cornered the Uber driver in Streatham in January of last year after believing he was trying to steal the woman’s handbag.

They repeatedly punched the Somali driver’s face as a result of the dispute.

On the evening of January 10, 2017, Johnson travelled in an Uber cab from her home address in Carshalton to nearby Middleton Road where she asked the driver to stop so she could go into a shop.

While she was in the shop, the driver – who speaks limited English – drove off.

He did not realise that Johnson's bag was in the back of the car.

Johnson used an app to trace her phone to the Uber car, which, with the help of her friends including Pal, they tracked and followed in another car.

Johnson and Pal confronted the driver in Madeira Road, Streatham, where they took the bag from the car and punched the driver at least four times.

The group made off from the scene prior to the arrival of police.

The victim was taken by London Ambulance Service to hospital, where he underwent surgery for three fractures to his cheekbone and eye-socket.

Detectives from Lambeth CID were able to identify Johnson as having booked the cab.

She was arrested on February 1 last year and further enquiries led to Pal being arrested.

Both have now been found guilty and will be sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on June 1.

Slightly worrying scenario in view of the number of smartphones left in taxis.

But does demonstrate the benefits of a booking system of that kind - how did these dafties think they'd get away with it? ](*,)

we recently had a bloke "book" a taxi in order to confront the driver and accuse us of stealing his mobile. he was adamant we had picked him up off the rank but none of my drivers remembered doing the fare.

Iphones are fitted with tracking devices. I have had customers track phones before and drag night drivers out of bed at 08.00 on a sunday morning to recover them even when I have asked them to wait till later when the driver isn't in bed
