Post subject:  Distributor road
At long last Melton Mowbray is to get a distributor Road (bypass)
Yesterday the Government gave the green light to funding the final £50 million which together with the £14 million from Leicestershire County Council means that the north and east parts can begin in 2020 for completion around 2022. The Southern part of the route is being funded by s106 contributions from the building of up to 4,500 new homes in the town.

Oh great 5 YEARS OF ROADWORKS as if the route to EMA wasn't bad enough with all the shenanigans at Kegworth

is there a website with lots of nice diagrams showing the route and extent of the Chaos (sorry works)

Wait and see if they begin on the due date,everytime they give a completion date it is always extended for one reason or another.doubt if it will be completed in 24 months.

there will be 2 years of preparatory work with traffic disruption then the main roadworks scheduled for 24 months which will probably be nearer 36 months

so 5 years of chaos :wink:

Delays depend on if there's any compulsory purchases to negotiate. If there isn't any then they'll be finished on or before the date stated.

As far as I am aware the route was chosen in some part because most, if not all the land needed had been agreed. One of the biggest reasons that a project could fall behind is because there are only so many firms who are able to carry out this kind of project and so you are basically in their hands when it comes to delivery, again this has been taken into account which is why it can't start until spring 2020. There has already been at least 3 years of work gone into developing the route and getting things in place. This has cost just over £4 million so fasr.

Many a towns local economy has suffered as the result of a Bypass....people whistle on by rather than stop off on the way through.

Berwick suffered badly as did Dalkeith to name just two.

Our biggest problem is that people cant get into town to go to the shops because of all the through traffic clogging up the roads. Most of the traffic just passes through the town with very little of it able to stop even if they wanted to.

that's modern traffic management for you but lets face it Melton isn't exactly a shoppers paradise and with Leicester and Nottingham up the road. The main thing going for it is a few descent butchers shops

The thing is though does it need such a comprehensive scheme because the bulk of the through traffic is A606 with another big chunk coming in/out a6003 ; link those three together and that only leaves the Grotsville road which is not the busiest plus a couple of B roads

So you don't complain about the traffic every time you come through on your way to EMA. And obviously all the traffic surveys that have been carried out are wrong.
