TAXI drivers who lie in a bid to avoid speeding tickets are being prosecuted. The numbers of cabbies caught speeding by the cameras who then say another driver was behind the wheel - or that the driver has quit the company and gone to live elsewhere - is on the rise.

But the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership, which administers the cameras, has beefed up its resources to tackle the problem. Spokesman Philip Gwynne said: "Drivers of private hire cabs are the worst culprits.

"Cabbies caught on camera exceeding the speed limit claim another driver was behind the wheel at the time of the offence. "Others maintain that the driver has moved away and left no forwarding address.

"There's been a recent rise in the number of such cases and the Central Process Bureau, which issues speeding notices for the police, believe many are deliberate attempts at deception.

"They've responded by increasing the personnel and resources of the Enforcement Investigation Team, which tracks down people who don't pay speeding fines. "The team has a 97% success rate of collecting fines from trickster taxi drivers or bringing them to court for non-payment.

"We appreciate that taxi drivers have a living to make and that sometimes they are in a hurry to get to their destination or to pick up their next fare. "But they are subject to the same laws as everyone else. "If they break the law by speeding they must expect - and accept - the penalty."

Maybe it's because taxi numbers are so restricted in Bradford that PH are around 90% of the combined fleet?

The courts will view the speeding issue 2 on a scale of 1 to 10.

But they will view the avoiding issue (perverting the course of judgement) not too far off an 8.

A lesson to us all.

And it's not called "fibbing" it's called "perverting the course of justice" Porridge time.
