Taxi driver suspended after being caught illegally plying for trade

A taxi driver has been suspended after he was caught illegally plying for trade, it has emerged. Newcastle councillors claimed the actions of the unnamed male driver, who worked for Blueline, “gave rise to the safety of the general public”.

However, councillors decided to suspend his licence rather than revoke it at a behind-closed-doors meeting. The driver was convicted last August of illegally plying for hire and driving an uninsured vehicle, and was handed six penalty points.

Newcastle City Council’s regulatory and appeals sub-committee suspended him for two months at a meeting in November - details of which have only been made available to the public. Minutes from the meeting said: “The sub-committee was aware that this was the first offence of this nature and as such fell within the committee guidelines of illegal plying for hire, two months suspended sentence.”

Blueline would not say if the driver was still operating one of their fleet. However a spokesperson for the company said: “Blueline were not happy with the actions of the driver and in no way support nor condone illegally plying for trade. “We supported the decision by the council and believe the correct action was taken.”
