Tributes paid to woman in her 50s who died in Scunthorpe High Street

The woman who died in an accident on Scunthorpe High Street yesterday was a taxi driver.

Scunthorpe Live understands she was working for the local taxi firm Ashby Cars when she fell ill at the wheel.

The 57-year-old woman passed away after suffering what Humberside Police described as "a medical episode" behind the wheel of her Ford Mondeo.

The car then collided with an Audi A4 in the High Street.

Ashby Cars' premises are just yards from the scene but staff did not see the accident which happened near Oswald Road.

Humberside Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to the scene and the road was closed for several hours while a forensic collision investigation unit examined the scene.

The woman's family is aware of her death and are being supported by specialist officers.

The driver of the Audi also received minor injuries to their neck.

The collision occurred around 11.30am and police kept the road closed until shortly after 3pm.

A Humberside Police statement said: "A 57-year-old woman has passed away after suffering what is believed to be a medical episode while driving on the High Street in Scunthorpe.

"The car she was driving, a blue Ford Mondeo, was involved in a collision with a sliver Audi A4 around 11.30am.

"The driver of the Audi received very minor neck injuries. The road had to be closed while emergency crews attended.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area and who may have seen the collision which happened near to Oswald Road to contact us.

"The woman's family is aware and is being supported by specialist officers."

After the tragedy happened, tributes to the woman were left by Scunthorpe Live readers on our Facebook page.

Among the messages was one from Katherine Bryant, who wrote: "Sending my love and condolences out to all that knew this lady. Also sending healing light and strength out so that they can get through the dark days ahead."

Liz Hague wrote: "Sending condolences to the family at this sad time. Rest in peace angel."

Karoline Denford wrote: "How sad right before Christmas. Thoughts with family."

And Michelle Glentworth wrote: "Thinking of all involved. Such sad news. "

Seems the lady was a controller who was driving after her shift, rather than a driver

A taxi controller who died after falling ill at the wheel while driving on Scunthorpe High Street has been named locally as Denise Strong.

Co-workers at Ashby Cars have paid tribute to a "brilliant woman" who will be "dearly missed by everyone."

Denise, 57, died at the wheel of her vehicle after suffering what Humberside Police described as "a medical episode".

The car then collided with an Audi A4 - the driver of which suffered minor neck injuries.

She had just clocked off from her shift and was going Christmas shopping when tragedy struck at 11.30am on Tuesday.

The High Street was closed while the forensic collision investigation unit examined the scene, and it reopened shortly after 3pm.

Humberside Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to the scene.

Ashby Cars is based just yards away from the scene, although staff did not see the incident and didn't realise what had happened for several hours.

After Denise's colleague, Vincent - who did not wish to give his surname - heard the awful news, he stepped in to cover Denise's Wednesday morning shift.

Vincent said: "It's heartbreaking - we all couldn't believe it.

"She had just finished her shift and was going Christmas shopping.

"Denise was a lovely person. A real nice person all-round and she will be dearly missed by everyone here, and in Scunthorpe."

Shaffi Ali, a taxi driver who had worked with Denise for three years only found out about her passing the following morning and spoke fondly of her.

Shaffi said: "She was a brilliant woman who made time for everyone.

"Denise didn't have a bad bone in her body, she was a good person. I used to talk to her all the time in the office, and it's going to be very strange going in there and not seeing her."

At the time of the incident, several local shops had just opened.

George Constantinou, owner of Helenic Cafe on High Street, witnessed the incident take place.

George said: "I saw her collapse at the wheel. She was in the car on her own and just collapsed.

"Someone rang the ambulance straight away, and the paramedics did all they could and spent a long time at the scene.

"I went outside to see if we could do anything but police and paramedics told us there was nothing we could do.

"It was not nice to witness and I feel terribly sorry for the family."

A worker at the nearby Betfred branch had just clocked in for her shift as the incident happened.

She said: "At first, we didn't know what was going on, but then we realised there was nothing we could do and we had to go back to work.

"It was very emotional, you never want or expect to see something like that.

"I recognised the woman from Ashby Cars."
