The cabbie was savagely attacked in High Street, Cheadle, at around 3.45am today (June 10) before £100 in cash was stolen.
He was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.
Police arrested a 23-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man, from Stoke-on-Trent, at the scene on suspicion of robbery.
Another 22-year-old woman, also from Stoke-on-Trent, was arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm.
All three remain in custody for questioning this afternoon.
Now officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Officers responded to reports of a taxi driver being attacked in the High Street in Cheadle. The taxi driver suffered head injuries and had £100 in cash taken from him.
