Now taxi drivers are told they can't display England flags during World Cup as council joins Royal Mail in banning them amid fears they could distract other motorists

    - Drivers in Barrow-in-Furness could be punished by for displaying flags on cars
    - Taxi worker said it is 'disappointing' because flying flags is 'showing patriotism'
    - But council said flags are banned because they could distract other drivers
    - National Private Hire Association said 'very few' councils ban display of flags

Taxi drivers have been warned not to display St George's Cross flags on their vehicles during the World Cup.

Drivers in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, have been told they could be punished by the council's licensing committee for displaying the flags on their cars.

A worker at local company City-Lynx Taxis in the former industrial town said: 'It's disappointing. Flying flags is showing patriotism.'

But Barrow Borough Council public protection manager Graham Barker told how the flags were banned because they could distract drivers of other vehicles.

Mr Barker said: 'We don't want taxis with clip-on flags or internal flags. It's not allowed. It may well distract drivers of other vehicles.

'If regulations are contravened, we would contact the company to enforce them. A complaint would be passed to the licensing committee for a hearing.'

The National Private Hire Association said all councils have different policies on taxi drivers displaying flags, but 'very few' ban the practice outright.

A spokesman said today that the only way for drivers to get around a ban would be to take the council to court over the interpretation of licensing conditions, but this would be too expensive.

She told MailOnline: 'As it gets near the time, why does it distract the drivers? We get a lot of private people who put them in their own cars.

'The public aren't going to stand in the middle of the road and get knocked down. It seems a bit mad.'

It comes after Royal Mail banned its 125,000 delivery workers from displaying flags and stickers to cheer on England for health and safety reasons.

All walking or cycling postmen and delivery drivers were barred from putting mini St George's flags or stickers on their trolleys, bicycles, vans and lorries.

Bosses claimed the flags and stickers could blow off and become 'hazards' - with the ban affecting all 125,000 delivery staff, based at 1,400 delivery depots across Britain.

Staff branded the ban 'bonkers', but Royal Mail chiefs said any member of staff would be allowed to display the flags within their offices

When taxi drivers have been banned from flying England flags

During World Cup 2006, taxi drivers in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, were banned from flying flags from their passenger windows.

This was over fears the flags could hit passengers in the eye or fall off and hit someone - but flags on the driver's side of the car were still allowed.

In the same year, Cheltenham Borough Council banned taxi drivers from flying flags over safety fears, but changed their minds after a public outcry.

For Euro 2004, taxi drivers in Rochdale and Bury, Greater Manchester, were warned they could lose their licence if they were seen displaying a flag.

And during World Cup 2002, a taxi driver in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, was told to remove the flags on his car because it was not a 'safe practice'.

Same old story crops up every 2 years.

When will councils realise that ignorance is far better than making themselves look idiotic?

the England flag is associated in councillors minds at least with Right wing politics that's why they ban them nothing to do with causing a distraction

Which just goes to show how the PC brigade have taken over the nuthouse.

My view is that most of this doesn’t come from councillors, more it comes from nutty lefty civil servants.

Ban on Barrow taxi drivers flying England flags overturned

Council bosses lift ban on car flags after taxi drivers hit out at 'unpatriotic' decision

LICENSING chiefs in Barrow have made a U-turn on plans to ban England flags from taxis after drivers hit out at the decision.

Ahead of the World Cup, bosses at Barrow Council contacted Furness Taxi Trade Association and private hire operators advising drivers not to attach flags to their vehicles as they "put public safety at risk".

Taxi drivers in the borough slammed the decision as "dreadful" and "unpatriotic" and said those who choose to support England should not be singled out.

One Barrow taxi driver said: "I am not a fanatic football fan, but flying a flag every four years should not matter, we are still providing a service."

But as pressure mounted on the council, bosses decided to make a U-turn on the ban.

Bob Mullen, a representative of Furness Taxi Trade Association, said: "We should be able to support our national team.

"I have never known flags cause a safety issue.

"I think it is very good the council has made a U-turn on the ban.

"I don't think the council wants negative publicity again.

"It is nice to see common sense prevailing - as long as no one goes over the top."

This is the second time council bosses have tried to ban England flags from taxis in Barrow.

Ahead of the last World Cup in 2014, cabbies were warned they would face enforcement action if they were caught with flags on display as they were seen to "contravene vehicle safety conditions".

Dalton councillor Gordon Murray, who is also a taxi driver with Dalton Cars, said: "It is dreadful if we are not able to fly our national flag.

"If the flags were restricted for safety, then the council did right. But two small flags shouldn't be a risk".

Cllr Tony Callister, the chairman of Barrow Council's licensing regulatory committee, reissued advice to taxi drivers yesterday via email.

He said: "Historically, the council has recommended that licensed vehicles do not affix flags to the exterior, and that any internal flags do not obscure the drivers view.

"Additionally, there are licence conditions that require the vehicle to be in a good clean and smart condition and windows must be kept free of any visual obstructions.

"Taxi drivers should be mindful of these during the World Cup.

"Should they wish to fly one or two flags, they may do so, but in doing so, must not put public safety at risk."
