Possible changes to taxi signage in Crawley

http://www.crawleynews24.co.uk/possible ... n-crawley/

New, removable signage for taxis in Crawley could make it harder for criminals to target them for break-ins.

Crawley Borough Council last week announced it is consulting on changes to how licensed taxis display their signage in an effort to improve security.

Currently, private hire and hackney carriage vehicles are not allowed to use temporary signs such as magnetic door stickers. This is done to provide members of the public with peace of mind, knowing they are travelling risk-free in a licensed taxi. Permanent signage also prevents the risk of removable signage being stolen and affixed to a non-licensed vehicle.

However, after a number of private hire vehicles and hackney carriages were broken into earlier this year, the council’s Licensing Committee on Monday (11 June) voted unanimously to go out to independent consultation in order to establish public opinion on removable signage as part of efforts to improve security.

One incident, back in March, saw five Crawley taxis robbed in one night. Police had received nine separate reports of vehicles being broken into overnight around the Southgate area of Crawley between Thursday 15 March and Friday 16 March – five of which had money stolen from them.

The taxi trade is seeking removable signage in the hope that it will ensure that vehicles are not easily identifiable as licensed taxis and so prevent attempted break-ins.

Chair of the council’s Licensing Committee, Councillor Mike Pickett, said:

“We have a large number of hackney carriage and private hire vehicles here in Crawley and we want to ensure that both members of the public and drivers feel safe when hiring a taxi or out on a job.

“By consulting with key stakeholders and the public, we can make sure that we listen to everyone’s views and make the right decision.”

I don't have any particular view either way re magnetic door signs, but i'm not sure they will help reduce the number of taxi/PH break ins.

Door signs are not the only indicators of a licensed vehicle, roof signs, plates, advertising, meters, non smoking stickers and no doubt a few more things also give away the game, so to speak.

Four months later, and they've issued a consultation/questionnaire about the magnetic signage

Action plan to combat Crawley taxi break-ins

Crawley Borough Council is consulting with the public on changes to how licensed taxis display their signs.

Concerns were raised by drivers about vehicle security after some private hire vehicles and hackney carriages were broken into earlier this year, said a council spokesman.

As a result, the council’s Licensing Committee voted unanimously to go out to independent consultation to establish public opinion on removable signage as part of efforts to improve security.

The spokesman said: “The taxi trade is seeking removable signage in the hope that it will ensure that vehicles are not easily identifiable as licensed taxis and so prevent attempted break-ins.

"The council is therefore seeking views from the public to help inform any changes to the hackney carriage and private hire vehicle licensing policy via a short survey.”

Councillor Mike Pickett, chair of licensing committee, said: “We have a large association of taxi drivers here in Crawley and it is important that we make efforts to ensure they are able to protect their livelihoods.

“However, we also have to ensure we take into consideration the safety of the public, many of whom rely on taxis to get around. I would urge members of the public to fill out the survey and tell us what they think about the proposals.”

The consultation can be found online at http://www.crawley.gov.uk/consultation until 6 December.

The 'short' survey is actually 26 questions

And think it's best if I didn't say anything about the survey itself :-#

So a thief broke into a taxi and stole cash. Then he broke into other taxis and stole more cash.

Are Crawley drivers thick or naive?

I’m voting thick.

Pretty much the case.

Any of them with brains are either working on Gatwick cars, or for Emirates.
