Anyone outside the trade reading this might be forgiven for thinking there are three licensing tiers - taxis, PHVs and minicabs. In fact four tiers, if you conclude a "ride-hailing app" is something entirely different still. Then the MP confuses things still further at the end by concluding that they're *all* different types of 'taxi'. At least she didn't mention hackney carriages Theresa Villiers MP wades in over battle for London's taxis http://www.times-series.co.uk/news/1633 ... ons-taxis/ An MP has called upon the Government to listen to what taxi drivers have to say. Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers met Transport Minister Nusrat Ghani MP over regulations applying to both taxis and minicabs. Ms Villiers said: “Many licensed taxi drivers have come to me with their concerns about poor regulation of minicabs and private hire vehicles operated using ride-hailing apps like Uber. “I made the case for strengthening the rules applied to private hire vehicles on issues such as emissions and disability awareness, so there is a more level playing field between them and licensed taxis, which are already subject to much higher standards.” Ms Villiers also spoke about cross-border hiring, in which drivers can apply for a licence outside of their home town to avoid rules on mini-cabs. She also said companies like Uber should pay their share of tax. She said: “We need minimum national standards for licensing minicab drivers. “It’s important to maintain competition between different types of taxi, but we should try to ensure that it is fair competition.” |

Another online headline for this piece is: MP stands up for black cabs in taxi row Which cements the misconception that purpose built HCs are a different beast from saloon HCs, while of course they're both part of the same licensing tier. So that's potentially four licensing tiers implied in the article Of course, many people think saloon HCs are more minicab than HC, or 'private hire taxi', or whatever

Thing is we have to rely on politicians to change things. And most have no clue about our trade. |
