A controversial taxi firm boss has become the new sponsor of The Jeremy Kyle Show.

Steven Malcolm’s Glasgow Private Hire are now the Scottish backers of the daytime chat show, replacing the normal national sponsors.

Plugs for the firm appear at the start and end of each hour-long episode and during ad breaks.

The show is on for an hour every morning from Monday to Friday and gets UK-wide viewing figures of between one and two million.

Millionaire Malcolm, 54, owns and runs a string of other successful taxi companies across Scotland.

His empire includes Penny Cars, Paisley Cab Co, Lanarkshire Private Hire and Edinburgh City Private Hire. Last month, Penny Cars – who have 330 taxis – also became the stadium sponsors for Airdrie Football Club.

The deal, which will run for five years, has seen the club’s ground renamed the Penny Cars stadium.

Airdrie chairman Bobby Watson said: “Steven Malcolm has been a pleasure to deal with and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with Penny Cars at the Penny Cars Stadium.”

In August last year, part of a fleet of Mercedes taxis at Penny Cars was burned out at their headquarters in Chapelhall, Lanarkshire, by arsonists.

In November 2014, Malcolm was photographed with crime boss Steven “Bonzo” Daniel, 38, and underworld figure Mark Richardson, 31, at Glasgow Private Hire offices in Glasgow.

Richardson was jailed for eight years earlier this year at the High Court in Glasgow for his role in an organised crime gang who flooded Scotland with guns and drugs.

Daniel suffered serious facial injuries in an attack in Port Dundas, Glasgow, in May last year.

In January, the mutilated crime boss was photographed leaving the offices of Penny Cars in Chapelhall.

Malcolm has continually denied having any significant association with Daniel or Richardson.

The TV show, hosted by Kyle, is based around often violent on-stage confrontations between guests, usually family members.

In 2007, a Manchester District Judge called it human bear-baiting during a prosecution where guests had been involved in a violent incident on the show.

Later that year, Learndirect, the government-backed sponsors of The Jeremy Kyle Show, cancelled their £500,000-a-year deal over concerns about its content.

In the past, the show has also been sponsored by bingo companies such as Wink Bingo, Foxy Bingo, Cheeky Bingo and Gala Bingo.

Last week, STV confirmed Glasgow Private Hire were now sponsoring the show in Scotland but insisted it was only temporary.

A spokeswoman added:“This is not something which is going to be long-term.

“It’s a short-term agreement pending the return of the main network sponsor.”

Spare money;

1) Reduce drivers rents
2) Sponsor a TV show

Difficult choice
