Tributes paid to taxi driver, 43, who died following city centre crash

The father-of-three, known to friends as Majid, has been described as 'one in a million'

Family and friends of a 'one in a million' taxi driver say they are in shock after his sudden death.

Tributes have been paid to 43-year-old father-of-three Amjim Amin following his death after a crash in Edwards Lane on Monday (July 16).

Known to his friends as Majid, he had been a Hackney carriage taxi driver for more than 20 years.

His distraught brother, Imran Amin, 43, said his family have been told he died from a suspected heart attack while behind the wheel of his cab.

It happened only moments after he had dropped his parents off at the City Hospital for a routine appointment.

Imran told the Post: "He was one in a million. He was a cheerful, loving character who would always put a smile on your face. A lot of people are shocked. He was always there for the family."

He said his brother, who lived in Lenton and was born and bred in Nottingham, leaves behind three children - two teenage boys and a girl.

"We were told he had a suspected heart attack. It was totally out of the blue," he added.

The incident happened on Monday (July 16) at around 10.50am in Edwards Lane near to Nottingham City Hospital.

He died a short while later in hospital. The road was closed for around seven hours before it reopened again at about 5.30pm.

Tributes have been paid across the whole taxi community since the news of Majid's death was announced.

Close friend Tariq Ahmed, 51, who has been a taxi driver for around 20 years, and worked on the ranks with Mr Amin, told the Post: "He was a great guy. He has been working for a long time as a taxi driver, for about 20 years.

"We grew up in the same area - he was a happy-go-lucky chap, very bubbly, always smiling. I am gutted. He had dropped his parents off at City Hospital yesterday and was making his way down Edwards Lane when he suffered a (suspected) heart attack. It was out of the blue."

Suki Purewal, 46, who grew up with Mr Amin, told the Post: "He was a hard-working father who did everything for his three children and his family and parents.

"It is so shocking for it to happen to such a young man."

Bobbersmill Community Centre opened its doors for people to pay their respects, with up to 250 people in attendance throughout the day.

Unite the Union, which represents a number of taxi drivers in Nottnigham, will hold a committee meeting to decide how taxi drivers in the city can pay their respects.

Kaleem Ashraf, 36, a Hackney taxi driver for eight years in the city, said: "He was a family man and a good ambassador for taxi drivers.

"It is a loss - any loss is bad enough but what has shocked a lot of people is his age. My sympathies and condolences go out to his family."

Chander Sood, 58, the acting chair of Unite union in the area, told the Post: "It is very, very sad. He was a decent guy. He was born and grew up here and been a taxi driver for 20 plus years.

"Everyone is shocked and a few of the drivers went down to see the family and paid their condolences. We are going to have a committee meeting and decide what we can do."

Private hire driver Azeem Hanif, 47, from Basford, is the chairman of the trade union United Private Hire Drivers (Nottingham Branch) which supports more than 100 private hire drivers.

He said drivers were saddened by the news.

He said: "We all want to show our brotherhood and solidarity on the day of the funeral because we are all taxi drivers.

"It does not matter whether we are Hackney or private hire - we all go out to work to earn a living and it is shocking and sad - he goes out to work but never comes home."

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "Officers were called to Edwards Lane at around 10.50am.

"A taxi is believed to have crashed into a parked car.

"A 43-year-old man was taken to hospital but was sadly pronounced dead a short while later. Our thoughts remain with his family at this difficult time.

"Enquiries are on-going and if anyone was in the area at the time or has any more information, please call us on 101, quoting incident number 293 of 16 July 2018."

very sad commiserations and best wishes for the future to his family

And the previous comment was about journos misrepresenting our trade

tier 1=hackney
tier 2= private hire

teaching journos to distinguish between the two might actually help both tiers
