Taxi driver refuses to take couple home because they were 'too wet'

Haze Curtis and Eloise Scaysbrook say Tower Cabs left them waiting in the rain for 40 minutes

A young couple left waiting almost an hour for a cab in the rain say they were refused a ride home - for being too wet.

Haze Curtis and Eloise Scaysbrook say their night at Plympton's Love Summer Festival was ruined because they were stood up by Tower Cabs.

The love birds pre-booked a ride back to their Plymouth Royal Parade flat for 11pm on Saturday night.

But they said it all went wrong the minute they made their way to the 'white gate' - where cabs were due to pick up revellers from the Newnham Park bash.

Their Tower Cabs ride didn't show up at the pick-up stop on time - and Haze and Eloise say they ended up waiting in heavy rain until 11.40pm before their taxi arrived.

They say their driver - who had a 'thick local accent' - wound down his window and told them he wouldn't take them unless they had the cash to get the car valeted as they were soaking.

Eloise, 19, said she and 21-year-old labourer Haze tried to reason with their driver but he was having none of it.

"We just stood there and I was in complete shock," shop worker Eloise said.

"I said; "so you're saying you can't take us home?" I pleaded with him, saying we're tired and soaking wet.

"We are just nice people - we were prepared to take off our shoes and coats but then he was like, unless, you can pay for the car to be valeted, I'm not prepared to take you."

The couple claim the driver then radioed through to Tower Cabs and argued for about 10 minutes about taking them, before driving away.

But matters were then made EVEN worse.

"He sped off up the lane, then, as he turned around, deliberately went through a puddle next to us and soaked us," Haze said.

"So we said to each other, "right, we should start walking."

Haze and Eloise trekked almost an hour to the Lord Louis pub before flagging down a black cab which took them back home.

"We were up to our ankles in water," Haze said.

"I managed to flag down a black cab; I said to the driver I had £12 on me, please get us home.

"I explained what happened and in the end we managed to back.

"What we feel is, we knew it was a busy night, but it's not acceptable for a company of this calibre to treat people this way," Haze added.

"On the phone, we were assured we would be collected.

"It was almost 40 minutes later, and then we weren't allowed in. It's the kind of thing where - if Eloise had been on her own, it could have put someone in danger.

"They are almost putting someone in danger doing something like that.

"We had a good evening at the festival, but that just ruined it really.

"The memory of that night isn't going to be the nice time we had, it's that bloody taxi company."

A call handler for Tower Cabs said no-one was available for comment.

From time to time I get idiots trying to get in my car who have jumped into the sea fully clothed.

Jump in the sea they may, jump in my car they wont. [-X

Is this a valid/legal reason for refusal ?
Is making a cab wet classed as soiling or possibly damage ?

You can refuse if there is a strong possibility the cab will be soiled/damaged, if very wet I suppose it could stain the fabric. And you have to think about following passengers, the vehicle would have to be taken off the road and the seats dried :?

Yes.

That said if it really was pi**ing down then every punter would have been wet, so the seats being wet shouldn't effect the comfort of any subsequent punters.

I honestly don't know, but it seems quite possible that it wasn't because they were wet, but just maybe they were a little (or a lot) inebriated!

We have one side of the story, theirs.

Rain water doesn't need "Valeting", but we all know the things that do.

The newspaper would not be interested in "we were really drunk and....." but "too wet" pushes all the right buttons.
