It has been a long road to recovery for Nottingham Cars driver Arif Qureshi, 61, of Nuthall, after his car was written off following England's quarter final win against Sweden on Saturday, July 7. A mob shattered his sunroof, smashed his windscreen, and destroyed his bonnet, offering him pound coins as an insulting token for the damage caused. He had to escape his vehicle and watched from a distance as his livelihood was ruined. The harrowing incident has left the father-of-one having to dip into his savings as his £9,500 Peugeot 508 was written off. The stress caused from the encounter has meant he hasn't been able to return to work. But thanks to the generosity of local people £4,819.84 has been raised, which will go towards buying him a new vehicle. He told the Post: "The car has been written off and the insurance are paying a minimal amount. At the moment I don't have another car and I have not been in a mental state where I could go back to work. Hopefully, after this week, I might be in a better position. "If you are bringing home money every day and week and then you find out it is no longer there, you are having to use savings or your overdraft and you get into financial debt. "I have not been sleeping. If I had not left the car and abandoned it the consequences may have been horrifically worse. It was a terrible situation but this damage could have been minimal if police had turned up and dealt with it." Money has been raised through a number of fund-raising sites. Chelsea Reason, 27, of Long Eaton, raised £3,299.89 through her fundraising campaign. She said: "The match was meant to be a celebration and they went and ruined it. People have been brilliant. There has been about 500 to 600 people who have donated." Other donations came from Nottingham Forest Supporters' Group (£340), Daniel Mellors (£95), Saeed Ahmed (£65) while Nottingham Cars raised £1,020. Walid Ahmad, 28, from Nottingham Forest Supporters' Group, said: "We set up a fund-raising page to help him get back on the road. We wanted to restore his faith. You put yourself in their shoes. Everyone was really keen, the average donation was £10 to £15." "Some people donated £100 and didn't even want their names published. I want to thank them. It never came in my mind that people would do something like that. This money will go into getting me another car." Nottinghamshire Police said a 27-year-old man who handed himself in has been handed a conditional caution while a 53-year-old, who also handed himself in, was voluntarily interviewed and released under investigation. Police said an appeal is still running to track down a number of other people involved in the incident. |

Well that's him told The starting point for criminal damage between £5,000 and £10,000 is 12 weeks in prison. Depended on the situation, and any aggravating factors, maximum sentence is 26 weeks in prison. If the loss is in excess of £10,000, it's up to 10 years. So, IMO, Nottingham Police should hang their heads in shame offering a caution to the fella. |
