Taxi driver suffers head injury after being dragged from his cab and beaten up by 2 men in Leicester https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news ... ry-1915294 The attackers drove off in the taxi but crashed into a nearby bus stop A taxi driver has been taken to hospital with head injuries after being dragged out of his cab and attacked. The two attackers drove off in his taxi but fled on foot after crashing into a bus stop in Hinckley Road, West End, Leicester. Police said the taxi driver was assaulted and injured at 10.05pm yesterday just minutes after the attackers had stolen a mobile phone from a man sitting in his parked car in nearby Narborough Road. What do police say about the attack? A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said: “At 10pm last night a man was sitting in his parked car on Narborough Road near Celt Street when he was threatened by two men who took his mobile phone. “Five minutes after that at 10.05pm a taxi driver on the corner of Hinckley Road and Cranmer Street was approached by two men offering him a mobile phone. “When he refused to buy it they dragged him out of his taxi, assaulted him and drove off in his vehicle. “The vehicle was later found abandoned after it had been driven into a bus stop on Hinckley Road. “The taxi driver was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary where he is being treated for a head injury but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.” What do people in the area say? A local shopkeeper, who did not want to be identified, said police taped off the entrance to Cranmer Street at the junction with Hinckely Road after the incident last night. He said: “I saw police officers with a man sort of crouched down on the pavement outside the estate agents at the top of Cranmer Street. “He looked in a bad way. Then an ambulance came and took him away. “Then more police cars arrived and they taped off Cranmer Road.” Police are appealing for information about the two incidents. Detective Sergeant Luke Wilsher said: “These incidents happened in a busy area of Leicester at 10pm on a Saturday night so there would have been lots of people around as well as motorists. “We’d really like to speak to anyone in the area at the time who might have CCTV footage, dashcam footage or anyone who witnessed what happened. “Did you see either of the two incidents or did you see the vehicle crashing into the bus stop? "Did you record anything on your mobile phone that might be useful to us? “If you know who was responsible for subjecting this taxi driver to a nasty assault then we’d like to hear from you.” Anyone with any information is asked to call the police on 101. |

Let's hope they are caught, and they spend a long time inside. Or buy some dodgy stuff and do society a big favour. |

Photos of the bus stop hit by the stolen taxi. No word on how the vehicle faired, but by the looks of the photos it must have suffered extensive damage. No more word of the driver other than that he was treated in hospital for a head injury that was not life-threatening. ![]() ![]() Images: Leicester Mercury |

Robbers jailed following brutal attack on taxi driver in Leicester's West End https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news ... ck-2685186 Nathan Connolly (22) and Kaamil Alli (18) were sentenced to 10 and six years respectively ![]() Image: Leicester Mercury Two robbers have been jailed after a brutal attack on a Leicester taxi driver which left him unconscious – moments after they had assaulted and robbed another man. Nathan Connolly (22), of Bland Road, New Parks, Leicester, and Kaamil Alli (18), of no fixed abode, were sentenced to 10 and six years respectively at Leicester Crown Court today (MON). The court heard that the pair had been in Narborough Road at about 10pm on August 18, last year, where they first targeted a man parking his car near to the junction with Celt Street. Gary Short, prosecuting, said: "The victim was approached by the defendants. One of them opened the passenger door of the car and shouted at him before stealing his mobile phone from the seat. "When he got out of his car to confront them he was punched three times in the face by one of the defendants while the other kicked him in the thigh." He was then told "Get back in your car or I'll kill you" by Alli and had about £200 in cash pinched from his trouser pocket. The victim was left with bruising and swelling to his face. The pair then made their way to nearby Hinckley Road, where Connolly approached a taxi driver who had just dropped off a fare and was waiting for his next job on the corner of Cranmer Street. Mr Short said: "Connolly attempted to sell him the mobile phone that had just been stolen. The victim said he wasn't interested in the phone but Connolly wouldn't leave it there and dragged him out of his car." During a trial held last week, the victim said: "The next thing I recall was being on the floor on my back. A male was standing over me, kicking and stamping on my face. I then lost consciousness." Mr Short said the victim suffered "very serious injuries", including a bleed on his brain, a black eye and swelling to his face and head and an injury to his arm. He spent six days in hospital. He said his injuries could have been even worse had members of the public not intervened. The defendants left the scene by driving off in the victim's taxi and CCTV footage later captured them arriving at Winstanley House restaurant, in Braunstone Park. The court heard that they continued driving the cab around the city, before crashing it into a bus stop near Braunstone Leisure Centre, before running away from the scene. Detectives traced the pair through DNA found on the air bags which had deployed during the impact. During Connolly's trial, last week, the jury were shown photographs of the taxi driver taken at his hospital bedside with "footprint impressions across his face". In a victim impact statement read out in court today, he described being afraid "to leave his flat after 5pm" and "constantly feeling that something bad will happen to him". Mr Short said: "They have stolen his livelihood from him. His car was very seriously damaged and he can't work due to his injuries. He is on benefits but the money is only enough for him to live on and he can no longer send money to support his family in Ethiopia." He also suffers from depression, a lack of confidence and is suffering from isolation. The first victim has also reported suffering from the psychological effects of the attack, including depression. Recorder Edward Boydell sentenced Connolly to a total of 10 years in prison after he was found guilty of two counts of robbery and one count of theft following his trial. In mitigation, Dharmendra Toor, for Connolly, said his client "respects the guilty verdict by the jury", adding that the crime spree was "short, spontaneous and unplanned". He added that Connolly, who has previous convictions for assault and public order offences, suffers from ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Alli, who was subject to a suspended prison sentence for another crime at the time of the robberies, was sentenced to six years imprisonment, having previously pleading guilty to two counts of robbery. His barrister, Gareth James, said the level of violence he committed was less than his co-defendant and commended his early guilty plea. He described Alli as a troubled young man who is could well have a personality disorder which "needs further investigation". Speaking after the hearing, Detective Constable Krupa Parmar welcomed the sentences and praised both victims for their bravery. He said: "One of the victims suffered serious injuries in this incident including a bleed to the brain and is still affected by the incident today. The other victim in this case suffered minor injuries after being subjected to a terrifying attack. “I would like to thank both victims for the bravery they have shown throughout this horrendous ordeal which has led to the conviction of both defendants. I hope they feel that some justice has been done." Det Con Parmar added: "My thanks also go to witnesses who provided strong accounts to help us in this investigation as well as the team who worked hard on this case to see this end result.” |

Quote: Mr Short said: "They have stolen his livelihood from him. His car was very seriously damaged and he can't work due to his injuries.
