Makes a change to read about a not guilty verdict in cases like this Cheap taxi though Grantham man accused of attempting to rob taxi driver is cleared https://www.granthamjournal.co.uk/news/ ... d-9007436/ A Grantham man accused of attempting to hold up a taxi driver at the end of a 50 mile journey has been cleared by a jury at Lincoln Crown Court. Jason Smith arranged for the taxi to take him from Market Rasen to Grantham at a cost of £70 but during the journey was alleged to have told the taxi driver a series of wild stories about himself. Lucky Thandi, prosecuting, said that Smith claimed to be a prize fighter and told the taxi driver he was a drug dealer with a violent past neither of which was true. Smith directed the taxi driver to drop him off in Redmile Walk, Grantham, and then left the vehicle saying he was going to get the fare from his father. But five minutes later he reappeared carrying a knife. He was alleged to have threatened the taxi driver and demanded his wallet and watch. In evidence Smith admitted he had the knife but said he was only trying to retrieve his own possessions which were still inside the cab. Smith, 20, who gave his address as c/o Earlesfield Lane, Grantham, denied a charge of attempted robbery as a result of the incident on 20 January this year and was found not guilty by the jury. He had earlier admitted a charge of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place relating to the same incident. He was given a six month jail sentence for that matter but was due for immediate release due to the amount of time he spent on remand in custody. |
