Five people have been arrested following the death of a woman who was hit by a taxi as she tried to get into her car.

West Midlands Police said a Mercedes car collided with a taxi while overtaking it on Waterloo Road, Smethwick, on Wednesday night.

The woman, 68, was hit by the taxi and died at the scene, the force said.

The taxi driver remained at the scene but the Mercedes driver left after briefly stopping, police said.

Officers detained five men a short distance from the scene.

The men, aged between 20 and 30, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remain in police custody.

Det Sgt Paul Hughes, from the force's serious collision investigation unit, appealed for witnesses to the crash which happened at about 21:50 BST.

"Officers from our dedicated family liaison team are currently supporting the family at this tragic time and I would urge anyone who can help us piece together the moments before this mother and wife lost her life, to get in touch as soon as possible," he added.

Can the passengers in a car be done for dangerous driving, or maybe they can't identify the driver?

They can all be charged with that offence under joint enterprise laws, and because they can't identify the driver.

It is definitely not a TAXI.

Difficult to tell definitively from the article and photos whether or not it's HC or PH, but googling the number on the side suggests it's part of something called the Heritage Cars Group, which seems to be one of those operations that's an amalgamation of several different historical phone numbers, but definitely seems to cover the Smethwick/Sandwell area where the incident took place.

So almost certainly a PHV.

Looks like they identified the driver (presumably) who is still under investigation, but the others are not now under investigation:

Express & Star wrote:
Police have now confirmed a 22-year-old man has been bailed over the incident but remains under investigation.

Four others who were arrested have been released without charge and are no longer being investigated.

Latest is that inquest has been opened and adjourned due to ongoing police investigation:

Express & Star wrote:
The inquest on Surinderjit Kaur Saund was opened and adjourned until December 3 at Black Country Coroner’s Court yesterday due to an ongoing police investigation.

It heard 68-year-old Mrs Saund was walking towards the driver’s side of her car, in Waterloo Road, Smethwick, close to the junction with Sycamore Road, on October 3 shortly before 10pm.

Senior coroner, Zafar Siddique, said: "A white Toyota taxi and a black Mercedes were travelling towards her.

"It appears the Mercedes tried to overtake the other vehicle and collided with the front off side of the white vehicle sending it into her path.

"The black Mercedes vehicle stopped further up the road initially, then drove off."

Mrs Saund, of Heath Street, Winson Green, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical cause of death was listed as fatal head injury due to a road traffic collision.

Mr Siddique added: "Due to the on-going police investigation I adjourn the hearing to let the them make further enquiries."

He offered his condolences to the family of Mrs Saund, who were not present at the hearing.

A 22-year-old man has been released pending further investigation.
