Seems like sort of thing that's quite commonplace, and surprised this made it to court.

An angry passenger must pay £75 for scaring a cabbie - and must stay indoors every night until the new year.

The order was imposed by a judge who heard that Ryan Hancock was one of four men who flagged down the taxi in Daybrook at 1am.

One passenger began to bang on the back of the taximan's seat while another shouted: "Drive, drive, go on drive."

Tom Heath, prosecuting at Nottingham Magistrates' Court, went on: "The driver became quite scared.

"He pulled up on Mansfield Road and asked them to get out because they were frightening him. One said 'do you want a fight?'"

When the driver began to phone police, Hancock pressed the button to end the call and said he "would knock him out," added Mr Heath.

Nigel Dicks, mitigating, said Hancock admitted threatening to knock out the driver but rejected the claim that he kicked off a wing mirror.

There had been an argument because the taxi "meter registered £2.90 when they set off.

"The four felt in some way they were being abused.

"A row ensued," said Mr Dicks.

Hancock was also annoyed that the other three passengers did not appear to have been taken to court, said Mr Dicks.

When told a curfew was being considered, there was opposition by Hancock of Hucknall Road, Basford.

He told the court: "I am not happy with a curfew, I am not going to lie."

He said that he sometimes works on travelling fairs and was told he would have to apply to the court if he wanted to do this job.

Deputy District Judge Olwyn Davies imposed a curfew which will last for three months. He will have to stay inside his home from 7pm to 6am.

She told him: "Taxi drivers work alone and are often in a situation where they are vulnerable. They are entitled to expect some protection from the law.

"If you have a dispute, complain to the council, don't act in this fashion."

As well as the compensation for the taxi driver, she ordered Hancock to pay £85 prosecution costs and a government surcharge of £85.

Hancock pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour on October 11.

:shock: Well if they think they were being 'abused' by a £2.90 flagfall...

often these situations are how you handle them but fairground folk are always very agressive over the price in my experience

Are you talking about fairground people specifically or are you lumping them together with the gypsy/ traveller community as apart from both living a nomadic lifestyle they are very different groups, though to be honest I can't remember ever picking up any one from the fairground community.

no the fairground lot I always dread fair week if you pick any of them up it's usually a short fare and from the moment they get in the car they start on you accusing you of ripping them off and they know what the fare should be etc etc and then usually shove £1.50 in your hand and insist that's all they are paying !!!!!

Quite a common one, often called 'Custody in the Community'.
