Something a bit odd about this one. Scenario certainly not typical of this kind of thing - happened mid-evening, woman had been with group of people who had just been dropped off, happened in a housing estate (or council scheme as we call them here), possibly with members of the public around, which obviously wouldn't be surprising in such a location at that time of night.

The woman was allegedly raped by the driver after he reportedly refused to take her home

A 23-year-old woman has been raped in the back of a private hire taxi in a terrifying ordeal.

The woman was dropped off in Glen Court in Motherwell on Thursday, October 18 with two men and another woman around 8.30pm.

The 23-year-old decided to get back into the Chevrolet Cruze private hire taxi, and asked the driver to take her home.

The taxi driver is then reported to have refused and raped the woman within the back of the car.

The woman then got out of the taxi and spoke to a passer-by who assisted her in getting a taxi to Motherwell Police Station where she reported the incident to police.

A 42-year-old man was later arrested and has been released pending further enquiries.

Police Scotland officers are investigating and are asking anyone with any information, or who was in the area at the time to come forward.

Detective Inspector Aileen Boyle from the Divisional Rape Investigation Unit said: “Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened and it is absolutely vital that anyone who can assist with our investigation comes forward.

We understand that there may have been other members of the public in Glen Court around the time of the incident and we are appealing to anyone who noticed a taxi or a woman in distress to please get in touch.

“You may think your information is not significant, but let us be the judge of that, because it could be important to our enquiries.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact the Divisional Rape Investigation Unit based at Motherwell via 101, quoting incident number 3872 of Thursday 18 October 2018. Alternatively you can call CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence.”

Well that's the driver's identity effectively in the public domain, then, unless a mid-sized town like Motherwell has lots of Chevrolet Cruze cabs.

And it's on several different news outlets.

If it didn't happen then someone is lying.

Maybe a charge of perverting the cause of justice is due.
