A former Glasgow City Council worker who was jailed after a drugs raid is set to become a cab driver.

William Griffiths was handed a licence to pick up passengers across Glasgow despite previously being sentenced to 14 months in prison.

He was caught with 59g of cocaine, two grams of amphetamine and £12,870 in cash when police searched the home he shared with two other men in May 2014.

In a separate raid, officers discovered 194g of cannabis, two grams of cocaine and £7,115.

Mr Griffiths also had £7,380 seized by police under the misuse of drugs act but Glasgow’s licensing committee deemed him a fit and proper person to become a private hire cab driver.

Speaking about the May 2014 incident, Mr Griffiths told the committee: “I was going through a divorce at the time and I moved into a house with two other occupants.

“When the police came to the door I was in myself and had just come off a nightshift.

“They said they found the drugs in the house, but they weren’t found within my property. I’m not involved in any recreational drugs.

“I lost my job and everything else. I’ve had to just get on with it and start from scratch.”

Mr Griffiths, who is now working as a furniture delivery driver admitted he had worked for the council for 23 years and had been an assistant security supervisor before he was jailed.

He confirmed that he is hoping to operate in Glasgow city centre when he starts work.

But after hearing Mr Griffiths’ denial that he was involved in the illegal drug trade, licensing committee member Robert Connelly said: “I know you’re saying you weren’t involved so it sounds like you ended up with the wrong people.

“It’s worrying to hear this. It is a very serious conviction.”

Despite those comments, the committee agreed to grant Mr Griffiths a private hire cab driver’s licence for a restricted one-year period.

They also issued a “severe warning” about his future conduct while Mr Connelly recorded his dissent against the decision.
