Dundee cabbies want more funding to pay for low emission cars

Dundee’s taxi drivers have joined a national campaign to get more funding for low emission cars.

Chris Elder of Unite said cabbies throughout the city were asking Dundee City Council to help them buy low emission vehicles.

He said: “When it comes to proper funding for low emission vehicles, the bus industry and other industries are getting more direct funding than taxi operators.

“These other industries receive money from councils for low emission vehicles where the taxi trade does not.

“The council has purchased low emission vehicles from government funding for its own fleet.”

Mr Elder said a wheelchair accessible, low emission taxi could cost up to £60,000.

A council spokesman said: “The council has been working closely with the local taxi trade in a bid to encourage use of low emission electric vehicles and this will continue.”

Nothing particularly noteworthy here in the grand scheme of things, but suspect Mr Elder is one of those allowed to run a saloon, while others forced to run WAVs, and yet others have to run electric vehicles on the new E plates :-# 8-[

Not sure what the council's long-term plan is for the whole fleet though :?
