Cambridge taxi driver loses licence over sexual offences investigation

Police said no further action is being taken against Nurul Jamal Uddin after an investigation into sexual offences allegations

A Cambridge taxi driver investigated for sexual offences lost his licence after the city council decided he was no longer a 'fit and proper person'.

Nurul Jamal Uddin lost his licence in May and appealed to the city's magistrates to be reinstated, but recently lost his appeal.

Councillor Gerri Bird, Chair of Cambridge Council's Licensing Committee, said: "I am pleased that the magistrates’ court upheld our decision that Nurul Jamal Uddin was not a ‘fit and proper person’ to hold a taxi licence.

"Cambridge City Council takes such matters very seriously.”

The city council said he had been under police investigation for a number of allegations of sexual offences when he came to renew his taxi licence in May 2018.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary confirmed it had investigated Mr Uddin over sexual offences allegations, but took no further action.

A Cambridgeshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that Mr Uddin was subject of investigations into sexual offences allegedly spanning the last two years.

"He was released with no further action in relation to the allegations.”

Cambridge City Council licensing authorities decision to revoke the licence of a Cambridge taxi driver was upheld by magistrates on October 31, 2018.

It was the Magistrates who had to decide whether Mr Uddin was a ‘fit and proper person’ to be licensed by the council following the disclosure of complaints made to police.

The law requires licensing authorities to be satisfied that any licence holder is a ‘fit and proper’ person. ‘Fit and proper’ refers not only to physical fitness but also to other aspects of a driver’s conduct and behaviour.
