Cabbie handcuffed by cops for chasing thugs after they lobbed pancake at taxi

A former Olympian has told how police cuffed him at home in front of his children after he chased thugs who threw a pancake at his car windscreen.

Taxi driver Isireli Naikelekelevesi stopped to let four teenagers cross the road last February. But the youngsters started swearing at him and a 13-year-old boy threw a pancake at his car.

Fijian Naikelekelevesi, who served with the British Armed Forces for eight years, got out of his car to ask the boy why he did it but the kid and his pals laughed and ran off.

The ex-Olympic and Commonwealth Games 800m runner then chased them for about 200m and pushed the boy ankle-deep into a burn “so his feet would get wet”. It is alleged some of the boys then started kicking the taxi.

After a complaint to police from the boy’s family, father-of-six Naikelekelevesi was arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

He was also forced to resign from his job with Mundole Taxis in Forres, Moray.

However, the Procurator Fiscal deemed a warning was enough and no prosecution was made.

But at a hearing to decide if Naikelekelevesi’s taxi licence should be suspended, Ray Walker, a representative for police chief constable Iain Livingstone asked Moray councillors to consider if Naikelekelevesi “is either a threat to public safety and/or whether he is, or is no longer, a fit and proper person to hold a taxi driver’s licence”.

It was the second time the police had asked the council to consider the suspension of his licence.

Naikelekelevesi, 42, who was allowed to keep his licence following a councillors’ vote, said: “It was an embarrassing moment as I was still at the Army camp and I was handcuffed at home in front of my children then put into the back of a police van and brought to the police station.

“I was just facing the consequences of my wrong decision that day but what place do kids go throwing things at cars?

“I have four boys and two girls and teach my children to have respect and to treat others the way they want to be treated.”

Wonder what the first time was about?

Guy competed in the 800m for Fiji in the Olympic Games though, so suspect these lads got the fright of their lives when he came running after them

This is him competing, but not sure why his head is chopped off in the second photo:

I get the distinct impression the police don't like the bloke

As for fit and proper not sure if this alone warrants revocation but clearly he does have a temper

He's certainly 'fit' if not 'proper'

But doubt if his temper is any worse than most in the trade, it's just that the average driver would have a heart attack if they tried running after young scrotes like that :-|
