Video doesn't show whole of incident - particularly the driver's window bit - but certainly demonstrates that driver did absolutely nothing wrong.

Doesn't say in the article, but I reckon it was the knacker's own dog, which seemed to be running down the pavement in front of him, then started crossing the road when he did. So the driver braked sharply to avoid it, but instead of the head-the-ball thanking him, he started trying to attack the driver with a knife

The terrifying Benwell scenes - reminiscent of a slasher movie - have seen locals brand the knifeman 'scum'

Caught on a dash cam, a stranger pulls out a knife and charges towards a taxi - before trying to attack the driver through his window.

The terrifying scenes in Benwell unfolded in front of horrified onlookers - and the crazed act may have been sparked over a dog.

Northumbria Police is now probing the broad daylight attack.

Friends of the driver say he was "gobsmacked" but unhurt following the incident.

"He was driving innocently along at about 20mph when a lad in a grey tracksuit came along," said one friend.

"The lass' dog ran in front of the car and he's stopped but then this lad has started chasing.

"He's then started stabbing the window and even tried stabbing him through the glass."

Miraculously the glass didn't shatter however the Peugeot sustained damage, including scratches to the window.

One friend said they believed the incident may have been unfolded after the driver almost hit the dog, braking hard after it ran loose onto Armstrong Road.

The driver was said to have been "shaken up" after the ordeal.

But the pal added: "He was driving at 11.30am and at that time, there could have been a mum with young children in the car or it could have been a little old lady.

"I'm just glad he didn't retaliate."

Initially the driver thought the attacker had used a dog chain, but upon watching the footage realised to his horror it was a knife.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At around 11.45am on Monday police received a report that a man had damaged a vehicle on Armstrong Road in Newcastle.

"It was reported that the man was armed with an unknown weapon, believed to be a dog chain or bat.

"The man was having an argument with a woman in the middle of the road when he has become aggressive and hit the stationary vehicle. Police have attended the area but the man and woman had already left the scene."

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone with information should call 101 quoting log 420 19/11/18.
