Taxi driver left two drunk woman at side of A46 because of dispute over fare

The stretch of the road, in Glenfield, is unlit

A taxi driver has lost his licence after leaving two drunk passengers in 'grave danger' on a busy road in Leicestershire.

The two women, who were intoxicated, were left by the taxi driver on an unlit stretch of the A46 dual carriageway near Glenfield at 1am.

They were left by the road following a dispute about the fare.

The passengers reported the incident to North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) who called the driver to appear in front of its licensing committee.

The driver, who has not been named by the council, appeared on the 20th November and had his licence to operate in North West Leicestershire revoked.

Committee members said they were "deeply concerned" about his actions.

Councillor Robert Ashman, chairman of the licensing committee, said: “This was an alarming case where two intoxicated passengers were left in darkness by a busy stretch of road in very real danger of being hurt by another vehicle.

“We accept there may have been a dispute over the fare but there is no circumstance where a licensed driver should abandon passengers in a situation that potentially puts their lives in danger.

“We acknowledge drivers can encounter difficult passengers, but as licensed drivers they are aware of how they can deal with issues that arise.

"The actions of this driver clearly did not meet this standard and as a result we have revoked the licence.”

The council is currently backing a campaign promoting the use of licensed taxis to get home safely this Christmas.

The council's deputy leader, Coun Alison Smith MBE said: “While we encourage people to use licensed taxis, we also need to make sure customers are safe.

"We also ask that both our taxi drivers and customers respect each other.

“Our licensing team has an important duty to ensure that licensed drivers understand their responsibilities in getting customers home safely and this case sends a strong message.

“I would like to encourage people to be respectful of our taxi drivers this Christmas – they do a great job and don’t deserve under any circumstances to be harassed or abused.

"Drivers are well aware that a police station can be the perfect place to drop off these kinds of customers!”

and of course the driver being in danger of violence from the two aggressive passengers is not mitigating circumstances ?

round our way almost ALL streets are unlit after 11 pm so is it unsafe to drop anyone off in an unlit area ?

And get yourself arrested for false imprisonment.

Bet that all over the council offices will be signs stating they have zero tolerance of abuse towards staff.

He wouldn’t be the first driver to be charged with false imprisonment/ abduction/ kidnapping if he did.

Around our way you cannot find a police station open.

There is no police station in Glenfield. The nearest ones are Braunstone and Beaumont Leys.

And who exactly trains drivers for those issues?
