A taxi driver has spoke of his concern about unlicensed drivers operating across Cambridgeshire putting the safety of passengers at risk.

Simon Stiff, who runs March-based taxi firm Daddy Cabs, says he has seen an increase in drivers taking passengers after posts on social media in recent months.

He explained: “This is something that has been ongoing for a while now and I have reported it a few times.

“You see posts on Facebook saying ‘anyone wants to go to the airport, I will do it for £50’ and these are becoming more frequent in the run up to Christmas.

“This is a national problem but in Wisbech and surrounding areas it is happening a lot.

“Its not just livelihood for taxi drivers – that can come second – this is to do with safety. There are ladies on Saturday night getting into unlicensed cars and safety must come first.

“We want to get the word out there to warn people, as it seems that nothing seems to be done.”

A Facebook group has also been set up for taxi drivers to report and discuss problems around the UK.

Fenland District Council say that all vehicles and drivers each need their own operators licence. This includes any driver or person receiving bookings, anyone with contracts for hire and reward in a private hire vehicle must be licenced.

A private hire business must be based in Fenland District Council’s area and you should have held a car licence for at least three years.

Medical requirements, such as eyesight, are also accessed.
