POLICE have vowed to visit motorists whose vehicles have been spotted parked in tax ranks in Barrow.

Taxi drivers have complained to officers about motorists using ranks in Dalton Road and Buccleuch Street.

Police have urged them to send in any pictures of offending vehicles whose owners will then be visited and warned.

Isn't parking a decriminalised offence now dealt with civil enforcement officers?

Not entirely sure, but suspect that it depends on whether the local area has decriminalised it.

But suspect police have powers to act even if parking decriminalised, assuming they wanted to. Obstruction, perhaps?

Think in this example the Council and the Police can with just cause be accused of aiding and abetting people to break the LAW.

It is still a criminal offence to stop, wait or park on a TAXI rank.

Agree with Sussex that a formal complaint should be made to the Chief Constable,Council and Councillors should be investigated by the Standards Committee if a formal complaint is made against them.
They only get away with this because people only bring their gripe to this forum and do not bother complaining to the official directorates.

Barrow taxi drivers warn 'it's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt'

https://www.nwemail.co.uk/news/17336070 ... gets-hurt/

TAXI drivers have warned it’s only a matter of time before a pedestrian is knocked down if motorists continue to abuse the taxi ranks in Barrow.

Only hackney taxi drivers are permitted to park on the official ranks in Barrow to allow members of the public to identify which cabs they can get into without needing to book.

But drivers are becoming increasingly frustrated with motorists abusing the ranks, especially in the evenings, and have warned it is “an accident waiting to happen”.

Hackney driver of 10 years Mark Baines said: “It’s an accident waiting to happen and I’m afraid it’s going to take an accident before any action is taken. It’s absolutely ridiculous.”

There are around 135 hackney drivers registered in Barrow, Dalton and Askam.

Hackney taxis are able to pick up fares from ranks whereas private hire vehicles can only collect fares which have been pre-booked.

“I only work the night-time trade so when regular cars are parked on the ranks that means we can’t earn a living,” Mr Baines added.

Ranks in Cavendish Street and Dalkeith Street can only be used by taxis between 6pm and 8am. There are also 24-hour ranks on Buccleuch Street next to Subway and in Cornwallis Street.

Bob Mullen from the Furness Taxi Trade Association has been liaising with police who have been collecting registration numbers of vehicles abusing the taxi ranks.

Barrow Police have told Mr Mullen that they have been speaking to Cumbria County Council’s on-street parking enforcement team and that a plan has been devised.

Taxi drivers are clear that they want the ranks to be enforced and are also still waiting for proper signage.

They also want police officers on patrol in Cavendish Street to spread out instead of gathering near to Theatre Bar.

Barrow Borough Council’s public protection manger Graham Barker said he was aware of “the difficulties experienced by the taxi trade”.

“Members of the public should be reminded that they must not park on any taxi rank and especially those in the town centre.”

Motorists issued tickets for parking in Barrow taxi ranks

https://www.nwemail.co.uk/news/17495509 ... axi-ranks/

TAXI drivers in Barrow have welcomed a crackdown on motorists parking in designated ranks.

Earlier this year cabbies warned it was only a matter of time before a pedestrian is injured if motorists continue to park on the ranks in the town centre.

Only hackney taxi drivers are permitted to park on the ranks; in Buccleuch Street, Cornwallis Street, Dalton Road, Crellin Street and Cavendish Street so members of the public can see which cars they can get into without needing to book.

But cabbies are becoming increasingly frustrated with motorists abusing the ranks and have called for the authorities to step in.

On Friday night their wish was granted as a multi-agency taskforce of council officials, police officers and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency took to the streets.

Cumbria County Council parking officers issued tickets to motorists abusing the ranks.

One cabbie said on Friday: “Traffic enforcement booking cars parked in taxi ranks;16 cars ticketed at the last count.

You can’t say you weren’t warned.”

Police officers also carried out out spot checks on regular vehicles.

Barrow Police said on Twitter: “Been at Barrow Town Hall tonight with Cumbria Specials and Barrow Borough Council assisting with taxi checks.

“Also checked a few anti-social driving non-taxis with ‘enhancements’.

“Overall standards were good; six vehicle prohibitions from 47 checks.”
