That's a desolate windswept winding road, witness accounts say it was caught out by a gust of wind that set the chain of events in motion and took it off the road, that would figure as I drove past that road end just 20 minutes earlier and it was blowing a hooly. poor chap that was killed had been offered a seat on the bus just before it left Newtongrange due to another pair deciding to travel by train instead.

That road catches a lot of people out, it's a really difficult road unless you know it well, long fast straights and hidden bends with odd cambers and dips, just bad luck on the day I'd reckon.
