Yet more tales of woe from Derby. Maybe council should concentrate on condition of the vehicles rather than whether you can see them from five miles away in the dark. Wonder how old that Metrocab is? Derby taxi banned from roads because its door was about to 'fly off' https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/d ... se-2392374 It was one of a number of taxis pulled over in Derby today ![]() Image: Derby Telegraph Police stopped a taxi in Derby city centre this evening and found it to be in a shocking state. Derbyshire police said fuel was leaking from the car and that a faulty catch meant one of its doors was vulnerable to flying open. They pulled the taxi over in Victoria Street as part of spot checks being carried out with Derby City Council today. Out of the 11 taxis they stopped, three were found to have faults. One taxi in Sinfin was found to have a damaged brake line which was "likely to fail imminently". Another, stopped in Derby's Ashbourne Road, was found to have "both rear tyres under-inflated" because they had nails in them, and a "filthy" interior which did not comply with the council's standards. Officers said the vehicle stopped in Victoria Street had its taxi plate suspended. They wrote on Twitter: "Fuel leaking from fuel filter. Rear offside door catch faulty, door likely to fly open. Taxi plate suspended and issued with a prohibition #PG9 #TaxiChecks." |

Had a look at the Derbyshire Road Policing Unit's Twitter feed and, contrary to the impression given by the newspaper's article above, two of the three prohibitions issued were in fact to PHVs. The following are the photographs and text from the DRPU: DRPU wrote: Taxi checks today with @DerbyCC. 11 stopped, 3 with faults. First at Sinfin. Damaged brake line likely to fail imminently. Taxi plate suspended and prohibition issued #PG9 #TaxiChecks ![]() ![]() DRPU wrote: Derby. Both rear tyres under inflated as they have nails in them. Filthy interior not complying with @DerbyCC standards. Taxi plate suspended. #TaxiChecks ![]()

The dirty car is nothing too extreme, just tell the fella to go and get it valeted. Sometimes I think the council/police get carried away in an attempt to justify the checks, and please the journalists watching the checks. They don't need to justify the checks, it's their jobs. If they catch no-one out that's a reason to celebrate, not a reason to say they are a waste of time. |

Yes, could do with a hoover and that stain could probably be sponged out quite easily, but apart from that I'm sure there are thousands of dirtier cabs in UK. I mean, you could clean your mats and *one* passenger could make them dirtier than those in the photos (although mines are black, so maybe show dirt more readily), especially at this time of year. (To be fair, though, when you take photos of stuff like that they never look as bad as they do in reality.) As for the underinflated rear tyres, the one in the photo actually looks quite normal, so presumably not *hugely* underinflated. As for the other faults, not really mechanically minded enough to comment, but would be interesting to see what would happen if police performed such spot-checks on ordinary members of the public.

Quote: the problem was during all that wet weather and people putting wet shopping on the seats soon produces a ring mark like that Exactly. Are the council concerned going to ban folks getting into cabs when it's pi**ing down with rain? |
