Why the heck was he given a conditional discharge in the first place ?
It’s still only cost him £248. Should be doing a couple of years for fraud.

Didn't realise police had power to order donations to charity etc as part of punishment

So when he failed to meet that condition he ended up in court, where he was fined and had to pay costs. I'm personally not a fan of cautions, but a bit more (but not much) of a fan of conditional cautions. However the liar decided he didn't want to fulfill the obligation, which he would have had to agree to, and thus ended up in court and in the press.

roythebus wrote: The judge ordered him to ay the charity. The police suggested it as a way to avoid court. In court the magistrates have no powers to say the fine should go to a charity. They only have those powers in respect of compensation, which is not an issue in this matter. |

Hmmm....but effectively the 'suggestion' is an order if the sanction for not complying with that suggestion is to end up in court?

The liar would have had to agree with the requirement when he accepted the conditional caution, so rather than an order it is deemed to be an agreement. If he hadn't agreed to that requirement then it would have gone straight to court. It's all part of the 'community resolution' process many are suggesting is such a good thing.
