POLICE are hunting a thief who stole a bucket of urine samples from a medical centre. The conman is thought to have snatched the deposit box in a bizarre bid to trick a taxi driver into thinking he was a doctor so that he could avoid paying a fare.

He even fooled the cabbie, who had picked him up in Birmingham city centre, into lending him cash before doing a runner with the bucket on Tuesday lunchtime. Sherwood House Medical Centre manager Nicki Blackburn said: "It's a bizarre thing to steal.

"He came in here and asked to register as a patient but it would appear he didn't have any money to pay for his taxi. "He went back outside with the samples and told the driver he was a consultant before he disappeared. It seems a bit excessive for less than £30 cash."

The bucket contained between six and 10 samples. But because the centre don't know who dropped off samples before 11.30am, they have not been able to alert anyone. Nicki said there had been a review of security and the incident had also been reported to the primary care trust.

She added: "These patients needed to have the samples medically tested. "They may need to have some treatment and that might be delayed because they will not know what has happened. "It is more an inconvenience for them and, until they call to check up on the results, we won't know who has been affected."

There's a large dollop of truth in that. I well remember doing an airport job many moons ago on a hospital docket.

Wondered where the doctor was going and he said Tenerife on his hols.
