Taxi driver loses licence appealhttps://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/n ... ce-appeal/A CHORLEY taxi driver has failed in his bid to overturn a Council decision to revoke his private hire and hackney carriage licences.
Shakail Ahmed, 40, of Pilling Lane, Chorley, had sought the reinstatement of his licences after losing both last year following two complaints about his driving.
After the first incident, reported on 23 May, 2018, and caught on CCTV, in which Ahmed clipped a hedge at speed while trying to retrieve a drinks bottle from under one of his pedals, a decision was made by Chorley Council’s General Licensing Sub-Committee (GLSC) to warn Ahmed about his future conduct due to his 18-year clean driving record.
A second incident was reported involving Ahmed hitting a kerb in the small hours while carrying passengers including two small children.
The decision was then made by the elected members on 22 August to revoke Ahmed’s licences with immediate effect, which was appealed.
In between the revocation and appeal there was a third incident when Ahmed used an unlicensed vehicle to carry out a booking.
Cllr Paul Walmsley, who has responsibility for licensing at Chorley Council, said: “We take the safety of passengers very seriously and expect all drivers we license to drive in a safe and responsible manner.
“Although Mr Ahmed’s record up to May last year was clean, we couldn’t ignore the severity of the first complaint, and after giving him the benefit of the doubt once we had no option but to act after the second complaint.
“We are pleased the court has upheld our decision, especially in the light of a third infraction carried out while the appeal process was underway.”
Earlier this month Magistrates in Preston dismissed the appeal against revocation and ordered Ahmed pay the Council’s costs of £1,900.
The appeal was heard on January 16.
