York police have finally agreed to act on non payment of fares after a driver successfully prosecuted a passenger in the magistrates court, when reaching the destination with £8.80 on the meter the passenger declared that he only had £2 60 on him, the police tried the old"it's a civil matter as he's offered payment" Our man pointed out that as the passenger knew that £2 60 was not sufficient to get him to his destination he had breached section 1 of the 1978 theft act and had obtained services by deception the case went to court and the passenger had to pay was fined £50 and had to pay court costs don't let them get away with it

The Police know it's not a civil case, the crime is "Bilking" (spelling) to obtain good by deception.
I wouldnt have taken him to court over £6.00 i'd have taken it out of his Teeth.

Yes, next time I have a meal at The Ivy, I'll offer them a couple of quid and see what they say

But well done to the York driver for standing his ground, despite all the hassle involved =D>

Post subject:  Saturday night runner!

I had my first runner saturday night. I usually take the money up front for out of town work but seeing it was manic I was on a roll and I wasn't thinking straight. Anyhow he refused to pay saying it was a rip off £25.70 fare after 22:00 time and a half. I phoned the police and they said they would take a statement off me the next day. When i got back to town I got out of the car for a smoke to relieve the adrenaline rush. The i saw a mobile phone in the back of the car and guess what it was the runners. Had mum and dads number on there. Uncles, Aunts, Grandads etc and best friend which I phoned and said I just found a phone and I would love to return it could you tell me what road and number I went to earlier where your friend lives as it was dark and I only know the rough area. He spilled the beans and told me straight away. However Sunday morning I had a call from this guys wife saying she would like to pay me in full and apologised about her husband being drunk. She paid me the fare and gave me a £5 on top. I returned her phone and as far as I am concerned the fare is paid in full.

P.S the police did not turn up sunday morning as they said they would. They havn't even contacted me and its Monday night now.

Kindest regards Alchy

A few years ago I had a runner out into the country side to a small market town, he seemed ok and had his wallet in his hand, so took him, he told me where he worked etc etc, the fare was around 25 quid

Just got to nip in for the money he said, as he left the cab spotted he dropped his wallet, credit cards, id drivers licence with photo etc but no money, and the runner never came back.
went round to a late night taxi office, showed them the photo, they sussed him straight away, the taxi office even called the police for me, when the cop arrived in a big 4 wheel drive police vehicle, I followed to the runners address, the cop banged on the door [03.30 hrs am], open up police, he shouted.
the front door opened and the cop went straight in, came back out, told me his bed was warm but thought he was hiding underneath the bed, the runners dad gave the cop the fare plus a fiver and all was well.

No surprise there then.

Still at least you got your money, although part of me would have considered throwing the phone into the nearest river.
