Reading taxi driver sacked after 'homophobic rant'

https://www.inyourarea.co.uk/news/readi ... obic-rant/

A private hire driver has been given the boot after subjecting a young lesbian passenger to a homophobic tirade.

The woman, was visiting her girlfriend in Reading on Sunday, February 10, when the incident happened.

The woman's partner, an 18-year-old from Whitley, contacted getreading and said her girlfriend was in 'floods of tears' after the incident.

She said: "He started telling her about how marriage should only be between a man and a woman and how she should find a 'real man'.

"He was going on at her and she called me afterwards in floods of tears.

"No-one deserves that. No-one deserves to listen to a homophobic rant when they get in a taxi."

The woman, who asked not to be named through fear of reprisals, added the incident in Reading, Berkshire, had left her partner, who had travelled for six hours to see her, "traumatised".

"We condemn the driver's behaviour"

The driver worked for the Reading-based Capital Cars, and manager Shahid Ahmed told getreading his behaviour was unacceptable.

He said: "The driver's level of English was not that good, and we understand there was a problem with what he said and what he was trying to say.

"However, we have rules here where our drivers are not allowed to discuss anything political or anything religious because everyone's views and beliefs are different and we don't want to cause offence to anyone.

"We condemn the driver's behaviour.

"He has sent a written apology to the people involved and I have also apologised unreservedly to them.

"He has been relieved of his duties.

"This is not the way we want to run our business."
