The man got out of a taxi in Mount Avenue, Hessle, while on the way home from Anlaby Road, in order to get cash to pay for his journey.
But as he walked away from the car, at 6.15am on February 22, the taxi driver pushed him and stole his phone.
While trying to get the phone back, the man fell and trapped his hands under the taxi’s wheels as the driver pulled away.
The vehicle was a small saloon type car, possibly a Volvo.
A spokesman for Humberside Police said: “We are investigating a report that a man was allegedly assaulted by a taxi driver in Hessle in the early hours of Friday, February 22.
“We received a call around 6.15am that the victim had been picked up on Anlaby Road and stopped off on Mount Avenue near to his home.
“The man got out of the vehicle to go and get some money. While doing so he claimed the driver got out of his cab, followed him and pushed him before stealing his phone as payment.
