Hackney cab driver is being investigated after video appears to show him refusing to put the meter on

A potential customer made a complaint about him

A cab driver is being investigated after a potential customer made a complaint about him apparently not being willing to put the meter on.

Hackney cab drivers in Nottingham have to use the meter for any journey that starts and finishes in the city, although they can negotiate a fare with the passenger beforehand if they're going outside the city.

But Christoph Castello from Keyworth said a driver had refused to put the meter on for a short journey in the city centre. He videoed the exchange with the driver, as above.

The 36-year-old said: "Next time I am out I will be doing exactly the same, as I'm sick and tired of Hackney cabs refusing to put their meter on in the early hours, fleecing late night revellers time and time again. If everyone did this they would soon change their tune."

Christoph said that he was trying to get from Goose Gate to NG-One in Lower Parliament Street at at 1.30am on Sunday, February 3.

He said it wasn't far to travel, but he wanted to get a cab as it was cold and there was light rain.

The video does not include this part of the conversation, but the driver can be heard saying, "Just £7, yes."

When asked if he can put the meter on, he replies, "No, you take a small car, mate, yeah," because his own vehicle is a six-seater.

Chander Sood, treasurer of the Nottingham branch of Unite for Hackney carriage drivers, said: "Every Hackney carriage cab has a meter fitted, and within the city they must have it turned on, even if the customer only wants to go 100 yards.

"If anyone breaches that, they should get punished. I've got no sympathy for them.

"But I think the council needs to enforce this properly. This is happening every weekend because there is no enforcement."

Christoph has now complained to Nottingham City Council. The council confirmed it had received a complaint from a member of the public, and is currently investigating the matter.

A council spokesman said that anything reported to the authority by the public will be taken seriously and investigated, and that ‘mystery shopper’ operations are carried out.

He added that the authority carries out regular enforcement operations which have resulted in sanctions for some drivers, and works in partnership with bordering authorities around enforcement.

And if you can’t agree on a price, the meter has to be used!
