Public welcome friendly new look for Glasgow taxi cabs

A GLASGOW taxi company has unveiled a new look for some of its taxis to demonstrate the acts of kindness its staff carry out on a daily basis.

Glasgow Taxi's have shared the new Your City's Friends branding which appears on 30 of the iconic cabs across the city.

The brand is intended to remind people not only the core service provided but of the significant added value and charitable work the company undertakes all year round.

After first being installed around a month ago, more and more vehicles can now be spotted with the slogan on them.

The first driver to drive around sporting one of the new creations, Jim Smith, believes the design is going down well.

The driver of 10 years added: "I think because we do so much for the city, it has been well received.

"We have taken people to the hospital and, to be honest, you often don't take the money. You can see people are in need.

"There is a lot of trust in us."

Fellow driver David Hodgson said: "I love the job, we are a friend to the city. We are a permanent fixture here but we are a necessity.

"Long after everyone else stops for the night, we are always going to be there."

Another driver recalled the time he drove a lady's shopping home for her, after she returned to the supermarket to retrieve a £1 from her trolley. He later returned to pick her up.

Stephen Flynn, Glasgow Taxis Ltd chairman, said: “We’re very proud to reveal Your City’s Friend as the new slogan for Glasgow Taxis Ltd, which perfectly captures the essence of our role in serving Glasgow. Our staff, members and drivers help transport thousands of people safely every day but we do so much more, often unseen or unheard, and always for the betterment of the city."

“For example, in the first couple of months of 2019 we have introduced defibrillators to 15 taxis, one driver helped recover the stolen mobile of a Strictly Come Dancing dancer, another fixed the wheelchair of a conference delegate, and we’ve supported the Beatson Cancer Charity, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice too. We’ve a phrase at Glasgow Taxis – “this is what we do” – and these examples and many more are simply all in a day’s work.

“Your City’s Friend is a complementary message to the famous People Make Glasgow slogan, which also features on our 30 cabs, reminding that our staff and drivers are the very heart of Glasgow Taxis.”

Except Christmas Day, presumably, when one of your drivers bragged in the press about the 20 hour shifts he worked every year

Look if members of the cab trade do good things then defo spread the word about it.

However the £1 shopping trolley tale is a tad bottle of the barrel. :-k

What's 'Download the Uber app here' in Chinese?

If you're walking through the streets of Glasgow this month, you might spot something a little different on our city's cabs.

To celebrate the start of another academic year, in which hundreds of Chinese students will be taking their first steps into university and college, Glasgow Taxis wanted to offer them a warm and visibile welcome.

The city's biggest taxi firm has had the slogan "Your City's Friend" written on the side in Chinese on half a dozen of their iconic cabs now operating 24/7.

The taxis are already proving hugely popular with Glaswegians of Chinese descent, Chinese students in the city and visitors alike, with many pointing, smiling and waving when they see the unique cabs.

Glasgow Taxis Ltd, the largest taxi company in Scotland and biggest in the UK outside London, say the taxis reflect their role as ambassadors for the city as well as celebrating Glasgow’s large Chinese community.

Dougie McPherson, Glasgow Taxis chairman, said: “Glasgow in 2019 is a truly international city and we wanted to make sure our messaging and communications embraced that.

“The response since we introduced our Chinese Your City’s Friend taxis has exceeded any expectation with drivers enjoying a really positive response – one lady commented it was like being at home while many school pupils have joyfully shouted the slogan loudly upon seeing it.

It’s been a fantastic response and we are currently considering the merits of extending this to other nationalities and languages. The positivity and togetherness is exactly what both the city and Glasgow Taxis Ltd stands for.”

Recent University of Glasgow data revealed that students at the university of Chinese nationality during 2018/19 numbered almost 3,500.

Qinzi Deng is a Chinese-born student at the University of Glasgow, now in her second year of studies, and was delighted to see the new taxis on Glasgow’s roads.

She said: “I think it gives such a warm welcome for Chinese students because we see our own characters on the side of the taxi and it’s a nice thing to share with our friends.

“There are a huge amount of Chinese students here and it’s nice that they can see a taxi like this that can be for them, making it easier for them to make contact or call a taxi if they need one.

“It helps to make people feel more comfortable in the city. They will quickly understand that Glasgow is full of friendly people and just how friendly a city it can be.”
